The Road To
The Final - Omegamen: After
a disrupted season with a number of match cancellations and forfeits Doncaster finished
third on the ladder. This set up a Semi-Final clash with the current State
Champions, Monash Ashes, who finished second. It was never going to be an easy game,
with emotions usually flying high in a knock-out Semi-Final. The reality however
ended up worse than most would have anticipated.
The
game was not pretty to watch, low scoring, extremely physical and dominated by tough
defensive work on both ends. It appeared that both teams were afraid to lose, and
never got into a scoring rythm. Goals were matched, and no team managed to break
away decisively, which led to a half time lead of one goal to Monash. Also
noteworthy is that during the first half, one of Doncaster's top scorers, Travis Hardman,
was knocked down (and almost out) by a Monash elbow, but appeared okay to play on after a
short break. It was not until half way through the second period that Travis
actually "woke up" again, with no recollection of what happened in the past 40
minutes.
With
the usual determination Doncaster set about turning the match around in the second half.
However, Monash would not hand over the lead easily. Once again, goals
continued at both ends, one after the other, and with about 5 minutes to go the score was
still in Monash's favour by two goals. It was then that Travis Hardman ran one of
his trade mark fast breaks, scored a goal, and was subsequently jostled by the Monash
keeper. This triggered a match deciding brawl, resulting in two red cards either
side. With a bit of delay Doncaster took advantage of the now readily available
openings in the Monash defence and finally found some much needed goals. Doncaster
took the lead and held onto a one goal advantage until the end of the match, winning 16 :
15. This game was certainly not the best advertising for the sport of handball, but
it was a thriller, and it had a happy ending if you are a Doncaster fan.
