Sanctuary Cove Boat Show Leads To Sales - Report on 12th Annual Meeting Held in May 2000

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show exhibitors reported good sales and leads at the 12th annual show in Queensland, Australia.

The show attracted a record number of exhibitors at 315, just tipping the 1999 record by three.

An early exhibitor survey found 93.8% of exhibitor respondents reported firm sales leads or actual sales at the show. Of those who responded, exhibitors nominated approximate sales and potential sales at more than $A8 million.

This year's show attracted the largest on-water display in the event's 12-year history with 171 boats on water and more than 380 on land.

Stebercraft's Alan Steber described the show: "It was extremely good, attracted top quality people - on Sunday only, following a few demonstrations, we turned over $A3 million in one day."

Hunter Yacht Sales Australia issued two contracts on boats on the first day and a further contract on the last day. Chris Szewczuk said the company was processing more leads in the days after the show.

Two innovations - the Super Yacht pavilion and sail basin - proved popular.

Sarah Morrin of Australian company Tasman International Yachts reported very strong inquiries. "There were better quality customers through the show since the last four or five years. "

And Steve Goodwin of North South Yachting said he found the show "fantastic". "It is now a serious yacht show as well as a power show. It's a great introduction for our Brisbane based office."

In the power boat sector, Australian manufacturers Mustang and Riviera and dealer such as Boating World were also pleased.

"We believe, from Riviera's point of view, that this is the premier boat show in Australia," said Peter Jenkins. "We were very impressed by the quality of people, it had an incredible feel for us," he said.

Bayliner Prestige Marine's John Stephenson said the company, and others in the industry seemed to be happy. "We've sold six already."

New Zealand's Ron Czerniak, from Maxwell which was part of a group of New Zealand exhibitors from export group MAREX, maintained Sanctuary Cove's show as: "the best boat show in the southern hemisphere."

This year's new transport arrangements led to some shortfall in visitor numbers from 1998 and 1999 records.

Sanctuary Cove Boat Show committee chairman Barry Jenkins estimated early figures indicated around 38,750 people attended the show.

"This is down from the 1999 figure of 42,000, however from exhibitor reports we believe many visitors were genuine buyers.

"We did expect some resistance to the new arrangements. We're confident that once people found how easy it has been to use the transport options, figures will creep up again for 2001."

A visitor survey found a very positive general rating for the event with 35% describing the show as "excellent" and a further 42.7% opting for "very good".

More than half (61.4%) of exhibitors received potential sales inquiries or sales from internationals from countries as wide ranging as the UK, USA, Germany, New Zealand, Singapore, Vietnam, France, Norway, Thailand, Korea, Japan, Vanuatu and Taiwan.

Other visitors at the show hailed from the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, China, Switzerland and Malaysia.

The Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show is staged at and by Sanctuary Cove Resort. The 2001 show will be held May 24 to 27.
