[Broomball] Broomball Association of South Australia - Autumn 1999

In a twist to the season, to try someting new. BASA changed the finals format to play them out as the best of two along with hour long matches (all season). Last seasons runners up the Raiders who have struggled for players this season made it to the finals. Whilst proven captain/coach Warren Einarsen and the talented Destroyers side cruised into the finals series, despite a last minute loss the week before. Week 1 saw the Destroyers despite consistant pressure from the Raiders hold them out for a 6 to 4 win. Week 2 saw the Raiders needing to win by three goals to take the title in a pressure match soring goal for goal, the Destroyers held them out, increasing the two goal margin from the previous week. Whilst the idea was good, most did not like the format and it will not be repeated next year (the hour long matches will be though). (Well done guys ;-)

[Broomball] USA Broomball Association

Disappointingly, there are now two American Broomball Associations. The USBA (United States Broomball Association) and the newly formed USA Broomball. Disappointing, because the two camps could not resolve their differences, and the USA Broomball was formed. I know that the two camps have differing views on some fairly sticky points. But surely that's why you have a committee, elections and why you vote! I'm sorry but I don't think it's good for the sport.

[Broomball] Swedish National Championships

The Northwest Territories held there Territorial Championships on the weekend of Feb26-28/99 in Fort Simpson, NWT. The Yellowknife Rebels Ladies All-star team was defeated for the first time in 15 years. They went through the entire tourney undefeated only to meet the Hay River Ladies team in the Gold Medal game. The game ended regulation time tied 0-0. Overtime saw two goals by the Hay River Ladies and one by the Yellowknife Ladies. What an upset. There were four ladies teams competing this year. Yellowknife, Hay River, Inuvik and Fort Simpson. The Yellowknife Ravens Men's team won this year beating the Hay River Bears. The men's division had three teams this year. Yellowknife, Hay River and Fort Simpson. The Hay River Ladies have won the right to Represent the NWT at next years Nationals as has the Yellowknife Ravens Men's team.

[Broomball] BASA - 1998/9 Summer Season Finals

The Vipers took out this seasons trophy over the Adelaide University Raiders (AU Raiders). The match was a surprise to many, with the AU Raiders the fast youthful team that finished the minor premiers. The Vipers definitely an older side, and down to just the bare 6 players for the night. The AU Raiders did not show the speed or flare that they displayed all season. The Vipers defence, playing easily their best game of the season, giving their Goal tender and easy time (me) of it. Final score:-
Vipers 3 - 0 Raiders

[Broomball] BASA Winter 1998 Premiers

The Hackers managed to rack up their third premiership in a row this season. Toughing it out against last seasons runners up (the Slashers), the Hackers performed again better on the night. The Slashers finishing on top in the minor rounds were clear favourites with injuries to the Hackers expected to hamper their finals run. The match went to sudden death overtime and with 10 seconds remaining on the clock the goal tender for the Slashers made a great save on a break out, but could not recover in time for the follow up shot and with his defence not yet in the picture it was a relatively simple put away.

[Broomball] USBA Presidency

Marc Hunter, USBA founder and President for the last three years has passed on the mantle to Bruce Bettendorf, as the new USBA President. Marc will continue to be involved at the executive level in USBA and will continue in the promotional and travel aspects of the sport. I think he can look back on a job well done. But this is not an obituary, so keep an eye out for Marc, you will see plenty of him around the traps yet. Cheers Marc.
