wow...fucking AMAZING show.

Drove down to DC from CT, 6 hour ride without many events. State troopers were out in force though, and there was a crucial 6 car pileup on the northbound side near baltimore that caused like an hour's worth of rubbernecking delays, but ahhhhhh the trek was worth it!

Got to the 9:30 club at like 5, and realized i was ill equipped for the weather. It rained on and off on us in line for about an hour, then it stopped and the sky just looked like it would open up on us any minute, but luckily it didnt. I had forgotten how much i don't like waiting in line, the only interesting parts was when "Starvin Marvin" came around lookin for handouts, and the 9:30 club guy came out and talked mad shit about crowd surfing and taping and trying to sound all badass.

The doors opened just about 7:30 and the line moved quite quickly considering the number of people that were waiting outside. The "patdown and search" was rather pathetic. I had my pager in my pocket, and the bouncer felt it and asked if it was a camera, and a simple "no" was sufficient to get me past. The venue was split into two sections, the balcony and the floor. Myself not really liking balcony viewing, I walked up to the stage and was surprised to not find many people waiting, so i ended up about 4 feet from the stage towards the left speakers.

At about 8:45, Queens of the Stone Age came on and said they were gonna "warm us up", but they didnt even get close. I felt kind of bad for them, because i looked around and nobody was gettin into the music, no hands in the air, no bobbing heads. Must be depressing for them....They really werent that good though, the guitar riffs were straight, yet they need to get a better lead vocal, he seriously sucked. The only somewhat straight song, was when they brought on that other guy in the back, and he kinda rocked.

As soon as QSA had finished, the press towards the stage started. At first it wasn't all that bad, but then around 9:50 a group of little gothed up girls decided it would be fun to try to make it to the front and center, so like 4 of them tried to push their way through and caused a ripple effect throughout the rest of the front.

At almost exactly 10, the Pumpkins came out and were greeted with loud cheers from all around. Billy was wearing his usual gear, D'Arcy with her cowboy hat, Jimmy was wearing what looked like some form of a muscle shirt, and i couldnt really make out what James was wearing. They started off(or was it after I am One?) by saying how they love coming to DC, and how last time they came down it was Monica time, but now its Kosovo. The setlist was identical(except for the end), but the crowd surge grew unbearable. Left and right left and right, and then i found myself getting pushed BACK from people coming in from the left, which i was none to pleased with, so i ended up about 20ft from the stage in the center(which ironically was the site of the most moshing). Billy's guitar got fucked up after I Am One, and he brought out his "guitar surgeon" to do the deed, while James explained what complicated things guitars are and how they like to break and do funny things when you dont want them to.

The new songs fucking rocked! I couldn't really make out too many lyrics, but i easily recognized Dross, and damn i want a copy of that!! Everyone got really into Dross, the mosh circle opened and about 10 guys and one lost looking girl were going crazy. I myself usually don't participate in the moshing deal, but i found myself so wound up by Dross and the other songs that i was jumping and barreling into people before i knew it. You could tell where the moshing "circle" ended and began, about 4 rows of people, and then you had the people who were pressed up to the front of the stage, and then those who got assed out in back.

After the new songs, they played a souped up version of Ava Adore and Today, and then they left the stage with everyone knowing that they would of course return for many an encore. The encore setlist was the same, except on the third encore they really starting playing around and looking like they had a good time, trying to play siva. Billy asked the crowd if anyone remembered the lyrics, and then they just jammed for a bit, and Jimmy ended it with an amazing drum solo.

Random tidbits, during the first or second encore(i cant remember which), it looked like Billy and D'Arcy exchanged words, and D'Arcy was looked pissed! Also during the encore, a chant was heard from up on the balcony for Starla, which would have been awesome, but unfortunately the band didn't play it. Also during the set, someone yelled "Play Stonehenge!" which caused Billy to chuckle. The band seemed really joyous and laid back, Billy was constantly smiling, or breaking out in laughter. As for the moshing scene, it was steady in the center, and came full force during Geek USA, until a 9:30 bouncer stepped in and stopped the fun, which caused plenty of dirty looks and swears in his direction. During the new songs, i ended up next to a guy who i would say was about 35 who had earplugs and was complaining to his wife or girlfriend about how his ears were ringing and how much they hurt, hopefully another stupid lawsuit doesn't come out.

After the show, the t-shirt line was packed full, so i couldnt pick up an arising shirt, even though they looked really cool. They were going for 25 bucks a pop and the arising tour posters were selling for 15. And now it is 6:38, and i drove myself home directly following the concert uneventfully, so excuse any mistakes due to exhaustion!
