17 - Descending Darkness Fist
Hong Kong Pak Hok Pai or Hong Kong White Crane Kung Fu now has many versions. We focus on the close quarter, sensing, short-range version. The Descending Darkness Fist was so called for the quick result it achieves. It is used to close off the opponents attack by crossing the opponent's hands and 'rolling' into their backs.
This is a very good technique to use against a rapid, upper body and head punching attack in tight quarters, smaller than a boxing ring. Low lighting, bad visibility and the need to survive are the key elements to this Fist. Once you have been attacked, you keep a close body contact with your opponent using you leg and hip to keep them of balance. The final technique sees you jumping up and landing a re-enforced elbow on your opponent. As they go down you also lower yourself into a crouch anticipating an attack from behind.
Movement
1. Outside Block-Inv Uplifting Gate Block
2. Back step-rollback Elbow
3. Jump - Descending Body Front Elbow
Targeting - In traditional sense, the target is the C7 vertebra, but this is too dangerous especially with Elbow Techniques (as they are very powerful). A much safer technique is aiming for the neck or shoulders. this would cause some trauma without casing permanent or life threatening damage.
Key techniques Covered
- Outside Block
- Inverted Uplifting Gate Block
- Rear Elbow
- Descending Darkness Elbow Fist

Breaking the Pillar Fist
A famous but corrupt fighter, who was extorting money from shops in several villages, needed to be stopped. But all who tried were severely beaten some even crippled. He boasted he can beat anybody with his fists and being a big person with strong upper body, he had the advantage. One day he hit the father of a young man who was on holiday from his school. The boy stepped in and was knocked out in one blow. The boy told this story to his master and mentioned the 1½ head size difference. The master suggested he needed to topple the top heavy person; destroy their 'Pillar' of stability!
A very important tactic is introduced with this fist, one that covers a very old Chinese Wisdom;" If the upper body is strong attack the legs, if the legs are strong attack the head; if everything is strong, be nice (the last bit is an addendum).
