Ceremony -
Celebration of Life
A 2-hour jazz concert that gives time to reflect on issues of our humanity: Creation -
Community - Environment - Conquests - Cultural Migrations - Youth - and Remembering.
Kevin's inspiration for "Ceremony - Celebration of Life'' follows in the tradition of
the sacred concerts presented by Duke Ellington. The program includes original works by
Kevin, scared works by Johann Sebastian Bach in the spirit of the CD Kevin Hunt plays
JS Bach, traditional gospel hymns, an ensemble of bells, a New Orleans-style trombone
and the voices of four excellent singers - Kristen Cornwell, Sarah Fogerty, Deborah
Foletta and Dan Barnett. The Canberra Times reported: "The concert moulded a
fascinating two-hour program around the music of Hunt, JS Bach, Oscar Peterson and
traditional gospel, blues, folk, hymns and chants. A highlight was the inclusion of the
bells of St Andrews." The Kevin Hunt JS Bach
Trio
Kevin (piano), Gary Holgate (bass) and Lawrie Thompson (drums) play the music of Johann
Sebastian Bach, rearranged by Kevin for the modern jazz setting. Often from these
arrangements newly-composed music emerges that is inspired by the Bach masterwork. Kevin
was commissioned to form the trio to perform at the Darling Harbour Jazz Festival in 1997.
The group's success grew and they released what was to be an award-winning CD on the ABC
Music label, titled Kevin Hunt plays JS Bach. The CD won the ABC 24-Hours
Listeners' Choice Award for Best Jazz CD Release of 1998 and was also nominated for an
Australian Record Industry Award (ARIA).
Don
Burrows and Kevin Hunt Duo
Since 1995, Kevin has travelled nationally and internationally with Don performing and
teaching. They spend time with students in a workshop setting examining the basics of -
playing music by ear, reading syncopated phrasing, ensemble playing and most importantly -
listening. Often these sessions are worked into a concert. "I can't begin to
express the inspiration I have received from working with Don. He is an absolute master in
his craft, and a thoroughly inspiring Australian" - Kevin.
The Kevin Hunt Trio
This group plays standards, with percussionist Fabian Hevia and have recorded the Cocktails
CD.
Tree
When Duke Ellington was asked to describe jazz, he said, "it's like a tree,... with
deep roots in the ground, searching for new nourishment and providing a solid foundation,
and at the same time extending itself skyward as far as possible." This is also a
great description of the music of the contemporary jazz trio Tree. With Kevin Hunt on
piano and synthesisers, David Jones (drums) and Steve Hunter (bass) Tree's music is a
collection of the many musical languages found in contemporary jazz music, from the Bill
Evans acoustic sound of the 1960s, to the electronic sounds of Joe Zawinul in the 1990s.
