Eye To Eye
Don Burrows and Kevin Hunt
Volumes 1 and 2
Recorded 2000, 2004, and 2006.
Nominated
for
Best Jazz Recording
The Bells, Australian Jazz Award 2007 Don Burrows and I have recorded and
released this recording to document and reflect on our musical journey since 1996.
Hundreds of hours travelling, performing and teaching together has produced many great
musical moments and compositions.
On these recordings, Don's compositions and playing are of striking excellence and are of
great significance to jazz in Australia. His amazing range of instrumental variety,
Clarinet, Flutes, Alto and Tenor saxophones, Percussion and his exquisite music making are
all on show in these recordings.
A special feature of this recording, are the interesting cross-cultural compositions and
performances influenced by our lengthy travels throughout South America.
Buenos Air, Mar Del Plata and Interlude are specifically influenced
by Tango. Our associations with the musicians of Argentina on two separate tours produced
these compositions. We have improvised and composed here in our own way, though clearly
with the rhythmic and harmonic influence of Tango. Merida is a composition
influenced by the Mexican music of the place Merida, on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.
This place holds special memories for both of us.
Don has a special connection with Brazil. He speaks the language, and deeply loves
Brazilian music. We have had two great tours there since 1996, producing a lot of music
and friendships. Triste and Loro composed by two very famous Brazilian friends of Don's,
Antonio Carlos Jobim and Egberto Gismonti, are pieces we have performed frequently in
Brazil.
Don's compositions, Babinda and You Never Knew are influenced by
Brazilian music.
Jazz Standards and the Great American Song Book are of course an important part of our
repertoire.
Don has taught me many of the 'standards' I know, and these tunes make up the core
repertoire of our 'classic jazz' style. Daydream, Our Love Is Here To Stay, You'd Be
So Nice To Come Home To, I Guess I'll Have To Change My Plans, I've Got A Crush On You,
Time On My Hands.
But That Was Yesterday is a blues composition of Don's, heavily disguised by his
brilliant unique harmony. This tune gives us a good opportunity to play a 'swing in 3',
and could well become an Australian Jazz Standard.
Maybe Tomorrow a composition of Don's that also could become an Australian Jazz
Standard. It is a rewarding challenge to play with its clever harmonic and rhythmic
shifts.
Brown
Shoes Blues composed by Michael Bartolomei, is a 'funky' blues for electric piano and
flute. This piece has been a wonderful piece for our performances all over the world,
including China. Don Burrow's own style in the 1970s like many jazz performers, fused with
rock and funk styles. I started my musical career in the 1970s as a rock musician, so this
fusing of styles works well for me Kevin Hunt

| PIANIST Hunt continues to amaze his audiences, live or listening to
recordings, with his versatility. ... he again demonstrates his comfort with songs that
range from the romantic to the inspirational... In each he
exercises his individuality and encourages similar approaches from his colleagues. The
result is a session which swings steadily. It is also enhanced by being largely
unamplified, giving the richness of tone which results in acoustically played jazz. |

Sydneys
La Brava jazz label has two key characteristics: it makes congenial records but with
substance; and it always gets a superb audio quality on its discs.
Sydney-based pianist Kevin Hunts new album is typical in that way, though one
hesitates to use that word when discussing such very fine artistry as this.
...Standards like Autumn Leaves and Tea For Two will not surprise at their
inclusion here, but more out of the way is fare such as Richie Beirachs Elm
which Hunt renders with extraordinary beauty... |

Loved Walked In
with David
Pudney (bass)
Gordon Rytmeister (drums)
La Brava 0055
Kevin
has released Love Walked In, a CD in the tradition of jazz trios bringing
together piano, bass and drums.Drummer Gordon Rytmeister, bass player
Dave Pudney and Hunt are long-standing musical colleagues. "In this recording we
quickly established a three-way interplay, both musically and personally, " Kevin
says.
The trio has been recorded with few microphones, straight onto tape, to achieve a live-gig
sound.
"There is no luxury of multi-tracking here it is the way jazz was recorded in
the 50s," says Kevin.
Love
Walked In was born from requests from audiences for Kevin to follow up on his
successful Kevin Hunt plays JS Bach CD and record some of his favourite jazz
works.
"I am influenced
and awed by the artistry of musicians such as Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett,
Bud Powell, and George Shearing, and Love Walked In is an opportunity to explore
these influences and pay homage to these great composers and players," he says.
In 1987 and
more recently in 2002, Kevin experienced what he describes as the heart of jazz piano by
watching Barry Harris play in New York City. "Harris has performed with Miles Davis,
Sony Stitt, and Cannonball Adderley, and is unquestionably the foremost exponent of the
music of [Bud]Powell and ... [Thelonious] Monk".*
When Harris
plays you feel his music is giving everyone in the room a great big hug. He has inspired
me twice now to be more devoted to jazz-music making and teaching," Kevin says.
Track Listing: No Moon At All, Elm, Tricotism/Cheryl,
Autumn Leaves, Tea for Two, Hymn to Freedom, Cry Freedom, Love Walked in, I Loves You

seemingly easy, simple style - so lyrical and so musical..."
"The
art of the accompaniment is also a masterful thing. Pianist Kevin Hunt is a music master
(to re-use a Carmichael title) - Kevin is generous, supportive yet stimulating. Just check

Kevin Hunt Plays JS Bach
ABC
Music 7234 4 95157 27
The Kevin Hunt Bach Trio, Kevin Hunt (piano), Gary Holgate (bass) and Lawrie Thompson
(drums) play the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, rearranged by Kevin for the modern jazz
setting.
"
I
suspect J.S Bach himself is reclining on a cloud, enjoying what another improvising spirit
has done with his music. "The results are as clever as they are joyous. Hunt has been
meticulous in reworking the pieces, and ingenious in opening them up as improvising
vehicles
" John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald (27/5/98)
This recording
was awarded ABC 24-Hours Listeners' Choice Award - Best Jazz CD Release 1998 and was also
nominated for an Australian Music Industry Award in 1998.

Tree - Love and LogicABC Music 7243 4 99910 26
Tree is Kevin Hunt (keyboards), Steve Hunter (bass) and David Jones (drums). Tree's music
is a collection of the many musical languages found in contemporary jazz music. From the
acoustic Bill Evans sound of the 1960s, to the electronic sounds of Joe Zawinul in the
1990s. All the music is composed by the players.
The three
musicians each have completely diverse musical paths that come together when the group is
producing its powerful sound.
The musicians who
make up Tree, each have completely diverse musical paths that come together when the group
is producing its powerful sound.
"The
Australian trio plays musical chairs with jazz boundaries. This is brilliant".

Tree - Tree
Independent release
The first release from the free-improvisation jazz trio Tree - Kevin Hunt (keyboards),
Steve Hunter (bass) and
David Jones (drums).
"Here's the debut album from one of the most absorbing bands Sydney has spawned in
years
"The mood swings from serene to cheeky to explosive, and all stops in
between. The common denominator is the ravishing, chocolate-sounding bass, the endlessly
inventive drumming and the quirky, good-humoured and impassioned keyboard playing ,
including some of the most convincing synth work you'll hear". John Shand, Sydney
