The JS Bach Trio plus 4 jazz vocalists , trombone and bells, are the feature of 'Ceremony'-
The trio plays the music of Johann Sebastian Bach,re-arranged by Kevin for the modern jazz setting, where plenty of improvisation can occur.Often in these arrangements, there is new-composed music, inspired by the Bach 'masterwork'.On two tracks of the recording,Kevin plays solo bells. This idea evokes the scared atmosphere of Bach's music, and gives a variety to thejazz-trio medium .
After being commissioned to put the group together by the Darling Harbour Jazz Festival'97,the trio performed at the Manly Jazz Festival'97, The tracks on the CD are based on: Prelude1,(AVE)
Prelude2 ,(Passage Of Time) Fugue No 1,(True Touch)
2part Invention No 1,(Theme For Everyman)

Workshop / Concert Programme:
1.The trio performs a set piece from their concert repertoire of arrangements and compositions, based on works by J S Bach.
2. Talk about the instruments, and players that make up the group.
3. The Rehearsal /Workshop process:
Kevin introduces the group to a new idea for a new arrangement of a J S Bach work. For example this could be one section of a fugue. Copies of the music will be handed around.
A discussion begins about the character of the Bach ,and the character Kevin intends to establish with the trio.A harmonic and rhythmic concept is decided on, a bass line is written and suggestions for the drum feel are discussed and tried out.
At this point there will be some interesting ideas being discussed and played. Sometimes it requires the players to play a repetitive feel with more discussion before we are happy with it.
This part of the process is open for other musicians to get involved with improvising. Depending on the abilities of the students, we improvise over one tonal area or many tonal areas of the Bach piece,so bring your instruments.
4. A final rehearsal and tidy-up of the new piece,so its ready to perform in the following concert.
Break -30 mins. -Concert
Eventually a piece is worked on with the students, and this piece is performed with the students in the concert that follows the workshop after a 30min break.
The four seperate sessions:
Jazz Piano
The Kevin Hunt Bach Trio
Tree
The Commuters Vocal Group
Often these sessions are worked into a concert. The interaction between the students, the teachers,Don and I,and the parents,is often crucial for the most to be achieved out of these sessions.
I can't begin to express the inspiration I have received from being close to Don these past four years. He is an absolute master in his craft, and a thoroughly inspiring Australian.
