5/8/98 - The Australian today reported "new Ericsson Cup club Northern Spirit yesterday lured another Australian back from overseas". Peter Blazincic is a former West Adelaide keeper and has played top level in China for the 2 years and gained high regard.
Adam Mark, an Eastern Suburbs SL player reports: "Manly Daily media dude/ex-Warringah Dolphin/ current Eastern Suburbs Wanderer/ Maccabiah games survivor and all round good guy, Phil Moss, has been signed for the Spirit. Not just that, but he tossed in his job at the Daily and is the NS development officer. I played with Mossy at the Central Coast last year and also switched with him to Easts this year and is one of the best defenders I have had the pleasure to play behind. Hope he makes the transition from Sooper League to A-league. He's definately got the head for it!!!!" It is reported that NS will play NSW SL team Sutherland on Friday 14th August at 7pm Seymour Shaw.

11/8/98 - Chris Beattie's Football Cavalier Reports Remo Nogarotto saying a further big overseas signing is in the offing. In other news Robbie Slater arrived back and attended his first training run - looked sharp - and stated he had signed for 3 years. The strip is said to be Red & White like an Ajax Amsterdam strip, with a blue & black away strip. The Spirit Fans Email List has 35 members. Join now!

25/8/98 - Bad weather had cancelled last nights trial at Mosman, but today saw a meeting between fans and NS management. Some usefull exchange took place. News: Games at 7.30pm. An area called The Point will be 'wet' and near the Bob Stand which will be general admission and planned as a key fans rallying point. A 'fans agenda' was handed over to the club management.

2/9/98 - Eye witness reports of the portable cricket pitch technology being installed at NSO, designed to allow both during summer and give both a decent surface. It will be interesting to see! National Youth League teams - U19 will play at Cromer Park, and Colts U17 will play at Christie Park, Marsfield. The trial game at Brookvale Oval in front of over 1,700 fans saw NS beat Brookvale PL 4-0 (3-0).

6/9/98 - The Spirit played their first EC opponent in a trial game in Canberra against Cosmos. The result a 3-1 win.

10/9/98 - Micky Brock, former A&BSW Editor, has been contracted to liaise with supporters groups, and invitations have gone out for a meeting of the NS supporters and UK supporters group's with NS management. Banners, flags, etc have already been discussed. Merchandise should be available through Rebel Sport and others in the next few weeks

12/9/98 - Trial Game: Saturday 12th September, 1998 at Macedonia Park, Stirling WA. WA 1 v Spirit 2
Half-time 1-1 Scorers: Cranney 32min, Zane 54min , Westerberger 35min (WA)

16/9/98 - Meeting for drinks between supporters groups and the Spirit team, including Robbie Slater and Ian Crook. The Club expects a 'full-house' for Oct 9th and asks fans to get there early. Free season passes for juniors going out soon. Perinich has a bad leg injuriy from training. NSO looks terrific and is ready for the big night.

23/9/98 - There will be a Spirit open training run on October 6th, from 11am, followed by time with young players from 12.45pm! Kids be there! Beatties Football Cavalier webfanzine reports that Tony Perinich joins Gabriel Mendez on the sidelines for much of the season, and Scotty Ollerenshaw is doubtful for some time.

25/9/98 - Junior players from the 3 feeder Associations received a kit containing a free season general admission pass, "Spirit Point" newsletter, and a poster with most players on it. This revealed Sponsors - Goodyear, Reusch, North Shore Furniture, Incredible Home Office Rental, Scuderia Veloce. The Northern District Times had an ad revealing the Mascot - a cross between Batman & the Archangle Gabriel!

Other Trial games: NS played NSW SL team Sutherland on Friday 14th August at 7pm Seymour Shaw, Miranda - Result: SS 1 v NS 5 (1-1) ; NS played Brookvale PL and won 4-0 at Brookvale Oval on September 2nd.

23/10/98 - Short term signing of Socceroo Robbie Enes until January is a boon to Spirit considering injuries in the squad.

26/1098 - Reported that 20 yo Crystal Palace front player Leon McKenzie is coming on loan to cover current injuries. UK reports of him are mixed, but any depth is welcome. Ian Crook out for 3 months. Casserley and Bilokapic back from suspension. Rudan carrying a small injury.

3/11/98 - Coach Arnold definitely called down bad luck on himself. He has now lost Troy Cranney for the season with an Achilles Tendon injury. Not only that but the lack of continuity must be affecting the team. Mendez still 2 months. Hope the Apprentices and NYL players can back the team up for the season. Get Spirited passed 4,000 hits in 9 months.

5/11/98 - The win against the Wolves brought in 14,818 to NSO, giving an average for the year of 15,819 (2nd to Perth Glory). Coach Arnold said after the game that he did not want to bring over a Crystal Palace player and set Daniel Watkins and the others back 6 months, but later he admitted he was going to seek assistance with a wide player to replace Troy Cranney

24/11/98 - Wayne Carlisle (19) a wingback and Nth Ireland youth international from Crystal Palace rumoured to be coming. The Open Day on Sunday went well and all enjoyed meeting the players. None of the four likely Spirit players were picked in the Olyroo squad to play China. Scott Ollerenshaw (No. 15) released from his contract due to his injury being much longer term than anticipated.

27/11/98 - Graham Arnold has announced he will concentrate on coaching and sit himself on the reserves bench. He also stated that Wayne Carlisle had come, and gone back as he was wasn't good enough. 15,862 at tonights match which holds the average up. Enes likely to head back to Europe after New Year, and Casserly rumoured to be heading off for trials in the Netherlands.

2/12/98 - Game v. Sydney United is now on Sun 6th at 3pm, Sydney United Sports Centre, Edensor Park Rd, Edensor Park. Spirit reported in SMH to be chasing Matt Bingley on his return from Japan. Ch 9 in Sydney are showing a feature on the Spirit in the 'Saturday Today Show', 8-9am Sat. 5th Dec.

7/12/98 - Canberra game now at 7pm at Bruce Stadium on 14th Dec, and the home game v. Gippsland on Sunday 27th Dec. at 5pm - as the ABC televised game! Record it and come anyway!

9/12/98 - Robbie Slater and Robert Enes picked up another Yellow Card each on Sunday and will now miss the game in Canberra. Beattie's Football Cavalier webfanzine reports that 3 NYL players are being considered for call up - 'winger' Tony Faria, stopper Jacek Sobczyk, and sweeper Elvis Olic.

14/12/98 - News that Adem Poric may sign ex. Olympic, but not on the park in Canberra due to negotiations breaking down. Adam Snyder, striker, was the first NYL player called up and had a few minutes tonight. Yellow Cards to Zane, Bilokapic, and Moss.

20/12/98 - Adem Poric has been signed and debuted against Sth Melbourne. Arnold played at sweeper v. Canberra and for a spell tonight, and Robbie Slater was missing from the line-up.

27/12/98 - Poric injured, but Mendez makes comeback. Slater talks on ABC about a striker coming!? Goldberg comes to see his team, and injures himself at training. Get Spirited passes 5,000 hits in less than 11 months!

3/1/99 - Crook back in the 2nd half v. Sharks, Arnie sees Red (out v. Breakers), and Nick Purdue rumoured to be transferring to Cosmos. News that Breakers fans coming down in some force for Friday as two winning teams go head to head!

5/1/99 - Zane picked in Olyroo Sqaud and will miss Marconi and Olympic games. Rudan and Bilokapic both over the yellow card limit and out (with Arnie) for Friday nights game!

25/1/99 - Rudan (Red Card) and Enes (too many yellows) are out for Tuesday's game, and Crook still out.

9/1/99 - Purdue on loan to Canberra Cosmos for the season. Enes is to stay until season end, before heading to Belgium. New signing Poric out for season with knee injury! Crook injured at training - out for a week. Adam Snyder starring in Youth League.

27/1/99 - Wild rumour that Paul Okon may come home, and to Spirit! Casserly and Crook still out. Sobzyck (YL) to join senior squad.

02/02/99 - Casserly in Netherlands at NAC Breda for a trial. Crook, Rudan, and Enes back for Brisbane game.

11/02/99 - Matthew Bingley reported signed. Casserly back from Belgian trials. Hopefully Enes back for Sunday. Reported that Derek Poimer did not get Sharks release to sign. 5 Spirit players in the 'train-on' squad for the Young Socceroos (U20) - Cunico, Bosnar, Watkins, Langdon, and Wearne.

14/2/99 - The Spirit Fanzine "Three Points & A Hangover" is launched (see Fans) for $2 - a great value read! Crook still injured, and Enes hobbles off - erggh! Rudan gets another yellow card. Our lowest crowd as heat, live TV, Brissie loss, and 'love' takes it's toll!

17/2/98 - The SMH reports that fans at the friendly game v. Sutherland tonight will see trialist Paul Foster, and Matt Bingley!

20/2/99 - Enes injured again and Marusic suspended (YCs). The "Terror" reports Crook and Bingley to play 1/2 each v. Knights. Paul Foster may be signed after 2 goals in the 5-0 win over Sutherland Sharks. Bingley, Foster, and 3 YL players shone in win over Sutho! Get Spirited passes 6000 hits.

05/3/99 - Bilokapic and Marusic injured in training today and not available v. AdCity. Paul Foster signed and on the bench (had first 1/2 game tonight). 'Goldberg's financial worries not affecting Spirit' says Remo. Sydney Cup presented. Spirit's U20 Young Roos honoured (Bosnar, Cunico, Wearne). Club satisfied with Supporter's club report's on the fans and police actions in the Brandon Park "ruckous"!

19/03/99 - Enes on trial in the UK at Barnsley (1nd Div) and may sign for $500,000 - he will not be in tonight's team, and a reshuffled team is likely.

26/3/99 - Enes signed by Barnsley but has returned home for the rest of the season and will play tonight. Arnie slammed the players and had extra training sessions after last week's loss. A group of Spirit fans will be driving down to Morwell on the "3 Points & A Hangover" tour for next week's games with Bob Stand mascot for company - what fans we have! News of June 5th Black Tie night - awaiting details

12/4/99 - Ian Crook out suspended next week against Newcastle. There will be a fans game at half-time (weather permitting) between the Breakers Rowdies and the Northern Spirit List. Rumours that Spirit will be signing young Turnbull from the AIS and that will mean at least 1 existing keeper to leave!?

25/4/99 - Slater, Rudan, Zane, and Langdon 'rested' for Marconi game. Antonio Faria gets his first run and does very well. Newspaper rumours of Arnie getting the 'flick' next year are nonsense.


Supporters night: Nth Sydney Bowling Club - July 10th. More than a hundred fans and a dozen players (and Remo) attended this Supporters Club arranged night of drinking, football yarning, raffles, and a good laugh over the fans awards to players and other fans. Supporters Club Fans Player of the Year went to Hendo and the Robbie Slater Award (for player / fan relations) went to Robbie Slater!. An edited highlights video of the seasons games and goals rounded out the night! Thanks guys and gals!

v. Wakehurst Soccer (sic) Club Premier League team - SPIRIT 10 v. WAKEHURST 0 (6-0) Clacka scored 5 and Tony Perinich looked good in Spirit colours!
Player news - rumours abound but one confirmed tonight is the signing of Simon Catanzaro from the NSW Inst of Sport, a high scoring striker!

Northern Spirit and Highlands United on Sunday, 25th July at Bradman Oval, Bowral ended with an 0-8 win to the young Spirit squad, with Simon Catanzaro, Tony Perinich, and Tony Fariah impressing.

Spirit 9 (Zane 7, Seal 1, Catanzaro 1) v. Mosman 1 (White) Tuesday 10th August; and Sutherland 1 (Richardson) v. Spirit 2 (Rudan, A Griffiths) Friday 13th August.

Charity matches: Defeated Newcastle Breakers 0 - 2 (Casserly (pen) 4, Faria 88) in Newcastle on Sunday 22nd August. We played Wollongong Wolves at Marconi on Sunday 5th September and were defeated 0-1 by an Esala Masi goal.
Spirit played Marconi for 4th spot on Sunday 19th Sept. and with a reserve team drew 1 (Maloney) v. 1 (Biliokapic), losing on the penalty shoot-out.

Trial game: Versus GHFA at Christie Park, Marsfield on Friday 10th Sept. V. Gladesville-Hornsby Football Association - Premier League Select. Spirit won 0-4 in front of 2,000. The Youth League team beat Thornleigh GHFA Premier League side 0-4 also.

Spirit fans warm up in the Bob Stand



NORTHERN SPIRIT BECOMES FIRST OVERSEAS-OWNED NSL CLUB - National Soccer League newcomer Northern Spirit will today announce that it's become the first overseas-owned club in the competition. The new owner of English first division club Crystal Palace -- MARK GOLDBERG -- will now have a majority stake in the North Sydney-based Spirit through his company MG Investments. The arrangement will see a fresh injection of capital for the new club as well co-operation between Palace and the Spirit both on and off the field. It's planned that the Spirit's coaching staff, led by former Socceroo GRAHAM ARNOLD, will spend time in London to learn new systems and techniques.

Goldberg now owns 70% of Spirit with Spirit Services (headed by Nagarotto and Spirit vice chairman Manny Zammit) and Western Services (headed by former Young Socceroo Rene Licata and partners) owning 15% each. Goldberg has committed $2M to the club and is expected to attend Spiritís first home game against Sydney Olympic on October 9th. Soccer Australia has given its blessing to the deal saying it's a terrific vote of confidence in the sport's national competition.
