12/1/99 - Inside Soccer newspaper carries a front page story on 'Breakers buy-out is now imminent', by Tony Moffitt. A largely Sydney based group of 5-7 businessmen have been negotiating with the Board through the 'a facilitator' said Executive Chairman Bill Collins. Action was expected by February. Other stories have game at Coffs Harbour and Gosford as well.

13/1/99 - News that the purchase of the club is only 10 days away. The consortium has made a down payment of $10,000. They are Sydney based but appear to want a strong Newcastle influence.

15/1/99 - Steve Bradbury reports that the consortium approached the Rowdies at the Brisbane game for their thoughts on the buy-out and the future. An idea of using a new Glendale stadium near a new railway station was mentioned.

20/1/99 - Inside Soccer reports that David Hill is linked to one of the prospective buying groups. Lee Sterrey tells the Newcastle Herald that he wants to be signed up for two (2) more seasons within the next month. Andrew Borghetto back in training. No news from Soccer Australia on the Melbourne Knights dressing room incident. Chad Mansley and Heath Timmins (NYL) touring with the Australia School Boy's Team

3/2/99 - Sprod injured in Perth - out for 2 weeks! Team but not ground reported sold to Sydney consortium for $400,000. Chad Mansley of our YL side scoring goals in Oz schoolboys Pacific Tour! Friday's game is on Optus. Thus game is at 7.30pm.

12/2/99 - No confirmation of buy out yet - deadline said to be Monday 15/2. Joshua Ferguson lifted from the YL to the 1st squad, with Pryce (suspended) and Sprod (injured) out. Borghetto not yet ready for even a YL run, and Tancheski is still injured. Swancott the only Breaker picked for the Young Socceroos (U20's). YL are 4th and still in final 4 contention.

26/2/99 - Shannon suspended, and Yoon injured. Tony Bauer (YL top scorer) brought up into the squad. No news on the buy-out yet, but rumours that Soc Aus are smacking a large fee and bond on the deal - The Bastards! Borghetto and Tancheski due back next week in YL. After tonight's game we have no chance for play-offs - building time for next year.

13/3/99 - Sprod and Borghetto played in the YL, Yoon injured. Rumour that the buy-out deal was off due to Soc Aus $1/2m demand, but this has now been replaced by one that its still ON! Board still stalling on signing Sterrey for next year, and they could lose him!

7/4/99 - Still no news on a buy-out, although Collins says he's still talking. The ground is under Auction on Friday 9th at 11am at auction rooms (Ed. it was passed in!) . Greg Owens out with flu, Sprod suspended and no more news on Borghetto.

18/4/99 - News in the NH that a new bid is on the table. Let's hope this gets up and the Breaker's can play in 1999/00 season. The rivalry between Spirit and Breakers fans was intense but fans joined in drinks after. Steve Bradbury's Breakers Winter Blues Site launched. He reports that a buyer may be known by weeks' end after Tuesday night's Board Meeting, and that David Hill has been seen around town. Another bid is believed to be from The Knights Thugby League club.

25/4/99 - Youth league in final 4. Sterrey rumoured in Steve Bradbury's Breakers Winter Blues to have next year's budget to sign 4 new players whilst shedding 4 current ones. My tip for purchase is two strikers, a stopper, one midfielder.

20 June 99 - Award winners at the Breakers presentation night were: Players Player of the Year - Bob Catlin, Supporters Player of the Year - Bob Catlin, Youth Squad Player of the Year - Josh Ferguson, Supporters YL Player - Paul Wheeler, Clubperson of the Year - Groundsman Jimmy James, Award for 150 Games - Andrew Roberts

Signings: Pryce, Swancott, McManus, Buonovaglia, Sprod, Wieczorek, Tancheski, Owens, & Wilson; plus fringe Marconi player Luke Tomic. Shannon & Catlin negotiating. Travis Dodd (Adcity mf) likely. Halpo rumour.
Training: Commenced Thursday 15th. Pre-season camp at Griffith later in July, at which Breakers defeated Griffith 1-0.

5/8/99 - The Breakers beat the Australian Joeys 2 - 0 at Breakers Stadium; Scorers: Greg Owens, Joshua Maguire

Comment on last season:
"Average home crowd for the year 98/99 was 3,881 (20% up on 97/98). The year's squad contained only 7 of the previous one, and new coach Lee Sterrey did a great job with what he had. Sterrey has proved to be a very astute coach, able to exploit opposition weaknesses, and shore up our own. Led from the front by Captain Shane Pryce the team went for 5 games undefeated at one stage, and the last 6 at home undefeated. A final position of 8th and 40 pts after a being top 6 chance until Round 28. " Chris Dunkerley 27/4/99

Trial Games - Played Sydney United at Edensor Park on Sun 19th Sept. and drew 1-1 - see match reports (Youth lost 2-0). Marconi defeated us on Tues 21st Sept. 4-2 in a training game. We defeated Hamilton Olympic (NBN League winners) 8-0 on Frid 24th Sept.

Charity KO match - Northern Spirit defeated us 0 - 2 at Breakers Stadium - Sun 22nd August (David Carty & Peter Forsyth Memorial Cup)

Squad of 21 so far: Goalkeepers: Bob Catlin, Brad Swancott; Defenders: Glenn Sprod, Josh Ferguson, Todd McManus, Shane Pryce (c), Andy Roberts, Paul Wheeler, Adam Sanderson; Midfielders: Glen Moore, Travis Dodd, Greg Owens, Brad Wieczorek, Mark Wilson, Vasco Trpcevski; Robert Angievski; Strikers: John Buonavoglia, Chad Mansley, Chris Tancheski, Luke Tomich, Andy Harper. YL keeper Jason Kos also available. Place for perhaps 1 more quality player.

24/9/99 - Expect in the next week announcments about sponsors and the new season web site. Romanian trialist Constantin Stanici is being looked over. I think he was trialling at Marconi earlier. Brad Wieczorek still getting over an operation 2 weeks ago

28/9/99 - Season launch held today, with new red/blue home strip and mostly white away strip revealed. Stanici not picked up but Sterrey pulled up former Breakers and Adamstown Rosebuds star Glen Moore in a late move.

07/10/99 - Businessman David Hall has made the final payment and it is official - he is the new owner of the Newcastle Breakers FC. The total deal - which includes the facilities at Breakers Stadium - is believed to be worth over $2 M. Sterrey thinks a crowd of 8-9,000 is possible against the Wolves. Breakers youth players Mitchell Johnson (YL) and Tim Sheridan (Colts) were picked at the National Talent Identication Trials this week. Peter Wood Colts keeper goes to AIS.

20/10/99 - Spirit's sale of ex Breaker Clayton Zane to Molde rumoured to be worth $200,000 to Newcastle.

22/10/99 - Rowdies v. Media game tonight (1-0 to Rowdies) A decision soon on trialists Damien Smith (back in town from Blacktown Demons), and Mark Brennan. Injury to Greg Owens (but not as bad as thought - out for 2-3 weeks).

30/10/99 - SMH reported Sterrey re-signed until end of '00-01 season (if still in NSL next year), Brennan turned down offer, Smith still trialling. Sterrey looking at trip to the UK for 1 or 2 strong imports. Game at Grahame Park Gosford is 'definite' for Sun Jan 2nd (v. Sydney United). Adam Sanderson broken knee cap - out for many months.

19/11/99 - Captain Shane Pryce may miss the Canberra game with 4 YC. After the last 4 games Sterrey may drop players down to YL. YL players Joel GRENELL and Mitchell JOHNSON are going 'On loan' to the AIS.

26/11/99 - Damien Smith signed from Blacktown City (ex Newcastle) and in tonights squad. Pryce suspended and Moore to play. 30 fans travel to Canberra for the game.

22/12/99 - Injured Greg Owens played in YL. Sprod needs surgery on floating cartlidge - deferred. The new 'cheer squad' the "Heart Breakers" debuted at the record fourth win Glory game.

03/01/00 - Sunday's crowd of 6,816 (higher that Nothern Spirit's) makes the average for the season 5,242 - a 35% increase over last year. Witchy's leg is OK & back next game, as may Owens.

05/01/00 - Supporters Club Dinner held at Austral Club with all teams, staff, etc. - Great night. Mansley out with damaged ankle for 4 weeks!

21/01/00 - Tonight's game - 2nd highest crowd 7,674 (avg. 5,697- 47% up). Extra seats erected on eastern side. Bobby Catlin 300 NSL games.

02/02/00 - Harper out next game (Wolves) with 4 yellow cards! Catlin record 303 games in NSL! HeartBreakers to star at Wollongong!

09/02/00 - Trpcevski and Weiczorek both out for Friday with 4 yellows, but Andy back! 500 extra seats for Spirit game.

11/02/00 - 2nd o/night - Sterrey says there's a long way to go - we need 53 pts before the hard 2 games v. SM run in the the end! Sterrey is seeking to re-sign JB asap.

23/02/00 - Players out - V Trpcevski (shoulder - 1 week), G Moore (hamstring - 3 weeks), M Wilson (suspended- 3 matches), Mansley (2 weeks ankle).

07/03/00 - 1 point behind leader SO but 4th on goal difference. World Club Standing for Breakers is 277th. Tancheski trialling overseas at Nancy - French 2nd Div.). Financial problems for David Hall supposedly being sorted out.

10/03/00 - The Melbourne Knights hoodoo continues, must be the name! Only 2nd home loss but still 4th. Harper RC means at least 2 games out!
