Medicinal Muds
In a world obsessed with hygiene and cleanliness, mud has become the latest byword in skin treatments. Mud and clay have been used since the dawn of time to beautify and heal.
Maree Mansour, whose company imports and markets fine red, green and white clays, says clay works like a vacuum cleaner, drawing away toxins and impurities. The minerals found in mud and clay such as potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium and iodine, penetrate the skin’s surface through a process known as osmosis, to detoxify and balance the skin and body. Some of the chemicals act as antioxidants, binding with oxygen to fight free radicals that age and damage the body.
Mud and clay, it seems, are also known for their ability to absorb the harmful effects of radiation. In his book, The Healing Power of Clay, Raymond Dextreit says, “We know that when a molecule is covered in clay it is protected against certain harmful rays.” One theory is that because mud and clay particles carry negatively charged ions, they pick up positively charged impurities in the body.
Scientifically speaking, mud is sediment, formed over time (sometimes thousands of years) containing clay, silt and other organic matter. The specific constituents are largely determined by the geographic location of the source. Muds range in colour and consistency. Naturally the mud you dig up in your back yard is not the type generally used in health and beauty treatments. The kind of mud that companies seek for therapeutic purposes is jam-packed with nourishing minerals and plant extracts. Add aromatic oils to the clay for specific treatment regimes, and you have a perfect healing combination.
