2. Set up the equipment you will need, including otoscope, lighter, ear
candles, scissors and a small bowl of water. Insert the
candle through a 20cm square of aluminium foil to protect the client's
skin in case the candle should drip.

3. Assess the ear canal with the otoscope. Turn on the light, attach the
re-usable speculum and gently pull the ear up and back
to straighten the ear canal. Notice the direction of the canal (this will
determine the angle at which the candle is held). Assess
the condition of the tympanic membrane (ear drum) if possible.

4. Light the candle wick and gently place the tapered end into the client's
ear. Hold the candle as straight up as possible,
slightly angled to align with the ear canal. Supervise the candle and the
client at all times during the procedure.

5. Do not allow the wick to burn more than 5cm at any time before removing
the candle from the client's ear and trimming
the wick into the bowl of water. You may trim wick at the flame and continue
candling or completely extinguish flame, turn
candle upside-down and clear out the wax debris obtained onto the work
area, then light again and continue.

6. Do not burn candle below one third of the candle. When finished, remove candle from ear and extinguish.
WARNING: Do not candle ears if medically contra-indicated.
