YAMAME(YA'MA'MAY) n, Jap
Onchorhyncus masou
Except for lacking the red spots along side its body, YAMAME is similar to AMAGO in all respect. YAMAME, when written in Japanese, is composed of three Chinese characters which can be translated into English literally as mountain fish lady. It is regarded in Japan as being one of the most beautiful freshwater fish and some serious admirers describe them as sexy. Although th specimen shown here might look far from being sexy, the younger fish will show more bright shades of olive, silver, copper and orange somewhat similar to the AMAGO pictured elsewhere in this homepage. This fish was caught on a size 12 parachute elk hair caddis and released in Hokkaido, the northern most island of Japan. The size was about 30 cm. Distribution: Eastern half of Japan.
