A landlocked trout indigenous to Japan. Sea-run form of the same species are called Sakuramasu. Distribution: Western half of Japan. Habitat: Cold streams. Relatively small in size, 40 cm at the largest and the average fish caught by fishermen being 20 - 25 cm. Very wary but readily take flies when well presented. Physical characteristics are parr marks that are retained even after their maturity and the red spots which differentiates them from their very close subspecies YAMAME. The fish pictured in my home page title was caught on a dry fly in Neba River, Nagano Prefecture Japan. The size was about 20 cm.
