Originated by Al Troth, the Elk Hair Caddis must be the most popular fly in Japan. Its simplicity to tie and the preference of the fly from the trouts of Japan makes it almost everyone's favorite. Its buoyancy is also suited for the rapids of Japanese streams. The only negative factor about this fly is that it is harder to maintain natural drift compared with traditionally hackled flies or parachute type flies, resulting in an increase of mishookings due to an unconvinced bite by the trout.
