Even though I was born in South Africa it wasnt until I came to Australia and was exhibiting my first show dog, an Old English Sheepdog that I met my first Basenji. Little did I know at the time that this dog was going to make such a big impact on my life and future.
As it turned out my first basenji was not really a show dog and it became very obvious that if I intended to stay in the breed I needed a good bitch. At the time the Afrika lines of Mrs Marie Dymock, were very sound, but in some cases I felt a little more elegance was required, I also liked the elegance and heads of the Pukkanut lines of Alan & Lauris Hunt’s. As it so happened Marie had a litter from Ch Pukkanut Zypher and Ch Afrika Ambassador and I fell for one of the bitches, and so became the proud owner of Ch Afrika April Showers who inturn became my foundation bitch. Over the years I bred to the Pukkanut and Janir lines and established my own line. The first major winner for me was Ch Baagna Erastus[Ch Afrika April Showers and Ch Pukkanut Wyvern], who was also the first of my breeding to get a Best in Show all breeds. His grandson Ch Baagna Hustler, a combination of the three kennels, Afrika, Pukkanut & Janir became the back bone of my kennel and I lost him in 2000 at the age of 17 years and 4 months.
A few of my favourite dogs within my kennel have been, Ch Baagna Justa Fella, Ch Baagna Hustler, Ch Baagna Lyka Hussy, and Ch Baagna Wotta Jackpot. A few of the dogs I have admired from other breeders in the past are, Ch Afrika Ambassador, Ch Wandra Ti Mungai, Ch Risregor Regal Dalabue and more recently Gr Ch Wazazi Classic Lover and the American brindle 'Johnny '.
I commenced my Judging career in 1988 and am currently licensed for Toys, Hounds, Working dogs, Utility, and the Gundog Groups. I am currently a trainee for the Non Sporting group, and I hope to complete my last group “ Terriers” in 2005. I have been honoured to judge Basenji specialties in the United Kingdom and Sweden. I have also had the pleasure of being invited to judge in, South Afica, Holland, Germany and also New Zealand.
