| Vickers Mark I |
| THE VICKERS .303 Mark 1 medium machine gun entered service in 1912 and is probably still in use somewhere today. A water filled jacket surrounded the barrel with a hose feeding into a condenser. It fired the same .303 ammunition as the Bren and the Lee-Enfield. Bullets were fed from a 250-round canvas belt. Rate of fire was about 400-500 rounds per minute. The most common means of mounting the weapon was a tripod. In Tobruk, the Vickers Mk 1s were usually manned by the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers. |
