| 'S' Schützenminen 35 |
|
THE GERMAN 'S' Schützenminen (Schüh) 35 anti-personnel mine is probably best described as 'vicious'. It was also known as the "Jumping Jack" or "S" mine. It could be triggered:
Once triggered, a small charge would blow the main body of the mine to torso height where it would detonate sending around 360 steel balls in all directions. |
>> In Let Enemies Beware, The History of the 2/15 Battalion [1], a very lucky Leo Clarke recounts how he or a companion triggered an S mine. They heard the ominous click as the mine was triggered followed by the detonation of the primary charge that blew the mine into the air. Fortunately, the main charge didn't explode and the mine continued on its upward trajectory like a skyrocket. |
