| THE HURRICANE was the first monoplane fighter used by the RAF. It was designed at Hawker Aircraft Limited by a team supervised by Sydney Camm. The prototype flew on 6 November 1935 and the first Mk I production plane flew on 12 October 1937. The Mk I was fitted with the Roll Royce Merlin II engine and later the Merlin III. Late model Mark Is were built with metal skins, armoured windscreen and armour plating; many early model Mk Is had metal skins retro-fitted. It carried eight .303 Browning machine-guns in it's wings. Some later versions carried twelve machine guns. The Hurricane played a decisive role during the Battle of Britain. It was slightly outclassed in terms of speed and firepower by it's main adversary, the Messerschmitt BF109. However, it's turning ability surpassed the BF109. Both Stukas and Messerschmitt BF 110s were easy prey to a competent Hurricane pilot. |
