| 25 Pounder |
| ONE OF THE great artillery pieces of the century. It was able to fire in both direct and indirect modes. Thus it was really a gun/howitzer. It's direct fire anti-tank capabilities (over open sights) came to the fore in Tobruk. It featured a unique turntable which enabled the gun to be traversed quickly. Maximum range was approximately 13,400yds (12,255m) with a 25lb (11kg) shell. Rate of fire was three rounds per minute. The 25 pounder suffered from ammunition shortages during the siege which greatly restricted the artillery capabilities of the garrison. Fortunately there was plenty of ammunition for the captured Italian guns. |
>> The 25 pounder remained in service, around the world, well into the 1970s.
Tobruk, Libya. 1941. Field guns of the 9th Australian Division in action. It appears that the gun positions had not been completed at this time. |
