AFTER THE initial assaults were repulsed, the fighting degenerated into positional warfare reminiscent of the fighting in the First World War trenches. A major difference was the difficulty digging trenches by hand to any depth at Tobruk.
To the German troops positional warfare was a change from their usual tactic of movement and required learning a new set of skills. Having fought in the First World War, Rommel was no stranger to positional warfare. Nor was Morshead and many other senior soldiers on both side of the red line. No doubt comparisons were made with Verdun.
Morshead was able to regularly switch battalions from the red line to the blue for a rest. |
