| GENERAL Neame, before his capture with O'Connor, issued an order forbidding troops under his command to use captured (Italian) weapons. Fortunately for the Allies the troops flagrantly ignored him and the use of Italian (and German) weapons flourished. The success of the Allied defence of Tobruk is in no small part due to the refurbishment and use of captured Italian weapons. The 2/13 Field Company produced a locally made version of the bangalore torpedo. It was made from 2-inch fire hose filled with explosive. It was easily coiled for carrying. The Germans mounted aircraft engines on trucks as a mobile form of dust storm generator to hide troop movement from the enemy. |
