"Soon after his appointment as area commander, Colonel Cook became very concerned at the number of rumours circulating through the fortress - some of them harmful to morale. The way to counter falsehood, he decided, was to publish the truth. Sergeant Williams of the Australian Army Service Corps was commissioned to publish a daily news sheet, under the title Tobruk Truth or "The Dinkum Oil".[1]

Circulation reached 800 copies a day and was circulated with rations.

Other publications included the Furphy Flyer (2/24th Battalion) and the 48 News Sheet (2/48 Battalion). The 2/32 Battalion had a news-sheet called The Newt.

The Afrikakorps newspaper was called Die Oase (The Oasis). The Luftwaffe also distributed a journal, printed in Vienna, called Alder von Hellas (The Eagle from Hellas), which found it's way to many Afrikakorps units.
