EQUIPPED with the Vickers machine-gun the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers played a vital role in the defence of Tobruk. They were able to lay down heavy barrages of machine-gun fire.

They were so popular with the Australians that they became known as the Royal Australian Northumberland Fusiliers.
