| Deutsches Afrikakorps |
| THE Deutsches Afrikakorps (DAK) was formed on 19th February 1941 and consisted (and only ever consisted) of 5th leichte Division and 15th Panzer Division. The DAK only formed a small proportion of the total German troops that fought in North Africa. However, Afrikakorps is often used to refer to all Rommel's German troops in North Africa. To explain the defeats administered by the DAK, Allied propaganda created an image that the Afrikakorps troops that landed in Tripoli were elite soldiers. This mistaken belief is still common. Whilst the troops that formed the Afrikakorps were well-trained, experienced, disciplined and confident, they were ordinary Wehrmacht soldiers. The Afrikakorps became an elite force by surviving in the harsh African environment, overcoming numerically superior foe and by gaining the respect and even admiration of those it fought against. |
August 1941- the DAK became part of Panzergruppe Afrika.
