| Libya |
| WEST OF EGYPT lay the Italian colony of
Libya. It had been in Italian hands since 1911. In a Blitzkrieg style campaign, the outnumbered British and Commonwealth forces (including the Australian 6th Division) under the leadership of General O'Connor, swept aside the Italian troops in Libya, capturing Tobruk in the process, and looked poised to eject Italy from North Africa. |
>> Libya was
conquered and settled by Berbers, Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Vandals,
Byzantines, Arabs, Turks and Italians.
>> Italy didn't gain control of the Libyan interior till 1928 due to resistance lead by the
Senussi brotherhood. |
