HITLER DECIDED to intervene in North Africa on Italy's behalf despite secret preparations for the invasion of the Soviet Union. He had already sent the Luftwaffe to the Mediterranean to help Mussolini in late 1940.
Italian supply ships landed in Tripoli carrying German troops, tanks and equipment. Under the energetic direction of a man whose name was to become famous, Generalleutnant Erwin Rommel, this small German force in conjunction with the remnants of the Italian forces, recaptured most of the territory taken by O'Connor. |
