EGYPT was a British protectorate until 8 February 1922 when it became an independent, sovereign state. However, the British still held control of the Suez Canal and rights over the defence of Egypt.
Egypt didn't declare war on Germany, but still
provided full co-operation with Britain. German nationals were interned and
their property sequestrated.
After their First World War experiences with Australian
diggers, the Egyptians insisted that they were billeted outside Egypt - so
they were billeted in Palestine whenever practical.
