| MINES PLAYED an important, if not decisive, role in the defence of Tobruk. The Axis also used mines to restrict the offensive activities of the defenders. If a mine exploded adjacent to an enemy occupied area, they usually raked the area with machine gun and mortar fire. The Italians dropped Thermos bombs in number from aircraft to deny an area to the enemy. |
