| TOBRUK WAS plagued with flies (musca sorbens), perhaps drawn in numbers by the presence of human habitation and death. Flies visited both plate and corpse. Bodies had to be buried quickly to combat the spread of disease. Sometimes it was difficult to bury the dead properly because of the hard, almost impenetrable, rock lying just below the surface. Consequently corpses were often uncovered by enemy shelling and the shifting sand. Latrines were to be covered with fly-proof boxes. |
