| Disease |
| IN MANY conflicts, disease often incapacitates as many troops as does the actual fighting. Dysentery (also known as "Galloping Grocers"), was the most debilitating of the diseases endured by the troops. It was spread by the plagues of flies. In the desert, the slightest scratch could turn into a sore which wouldn't heal - called a "wog sore" by the Australians. To prevent desert sores the Germans prohibited their combat troops from wearing shorts. Desert fever and jaundice were also common. |
>> Lieut. Harvey of the AASC was put in charge of one convalescent camp which became known as "Harvey's Camp for Poor Sick People". |
