Somerset & Dorset Pages

How about establishing some Somerset and Dorset family history connections on the Internet?

What other Pages gave me some background ideas?

When you look around for ideas on what might be background, you see some Cornish Pages and Wiltshire Pages online which are very helpful in tracing ancestors and getting to know what the country was like around the places where your ancestors lived.

If you wish, you can break in here to see what has happened since we started looking around, talking and acting.
Go to Surnames and Family Queries Index. There are some Oddities there too.

There are some wonderful links to many places in Somerset and Dorset now, often set up by the County Councils. Here are some of those which have started us off in the direction of establishing further links:

Somerset

Somerset Index You will have a wonderful time getting around the links on this Index.

You are of course in the apple county so expect to see these around.

Somerset Archives

Somerset Archive and Record Service : Among these pages, the Somerset Record Office gives you a guide to tracing your family history with them. You can inspect this guide to Genealogy in Somerset.

Dorset

Dorset County Council Home Page : You will find a wealth of places to explore here in what became known as the Wessex of Thomas Hardy's novels. The Dorset County Council has developed a fine index which is the place to browse many links. You will certainly see Corfe Castle.

If you are an avid reader of Thomas Hardy's novels, you will find a link to pictures of the Dorset places
which Hardy used as a basis for his stories.
The names of towns, villages and places are cross-referenced to the actual placenames he used in the novels.

Some Somerset and Dorset Pages?

If you are keen to have some further family history links established on a permanent basis, please contact me, John Symonds. There are several others who have Somerset and Dorset connections who would like to have communications developed and your queries and comments will be passed on to them also.

There can be exchanges of data such as by GEDCOM; Internet chat sessions are a possibility; you think about what might be, and there is no doubt it WILL be - eventually!

My home is in Australia but you can see some of the Somerset background to my interest in Muchelney; on Cornwall and the Cornish people in Australia too if you go to my Home Page.

Please let us have your comments and queries now!

Surnames and Family Queries

Responses keep coming in and you can see what is brewing by browsing at the Surnames and Family Queries Index page and go on to the other S&D pages from there. If you are finding the link to Australia is rather slow from the UK, try the mirror pages for which space has been generously allocated by Bakery Computing in Ilminster SOM from this S&D Link.

These pages continue to be maintained by John L. Symonds and S&D friends as at 20 December 1999.
