The Table below provides a means of listing surnames (and maybe first name) interests in Cornwall and in Australia, the locations (parish, village, town, Australian State and so on) which could be of value in your investigations, together with the name of the submitter and their postal and email addresses. Some entries are for people who have gone to other countries from Cornwall in the past.

The table headings and the contents will give guidance on the presentation. Note that the Chapman Code is used to abbreviate the County name in the British Isles and overseas places are abbreviated in the same Code for the State and Country.

Family Queries

Jean Hurst is searching for information on the FRANCIS and GROSE ancestral families in Cornwall. She has gained some of her information from the 1871 Cornwall Census and from St Cleer Parish records.
At the time of the marriage of Elijah FRANCIS and Mary GROSE at St Cleer CON, her father William GROSE was a witness and the record showed that the father of Elijah was James FRANCIS (miner, then deceased). Following their marriage on 6 Dec 1847, their children were: Matthew (1849), Elijah (1853), Phillipa Jane (1856), James H. (1858), Bessie (1860, Jeans's GGM), Eliza (1862), Emily (1866) and William J. (1869).
Elijah was shown in the 1871 Census as a copper miner. He died of typhoid fever at St Cleer CON on 2 Mar 1873. A Jane GROSE was in attendance at the time of his death. It appears that she may have been a relation of Mary Francis nee Grose.
The older boys emigrated to the USA and family legend has it that Mary Francis joined them, following the death of Elijah, bringing Bessie and Phillipa Jane with her. Jean has some definite information about the family in the USA but has no information about Eliza, Emily and William J. The same legend says that they were left behind in Cornwall but whether they lived there or had died already when Mary emigrated is not known. Another interesting story is that, in Mary's possessions which have been passed down several generations, there was a beautiful old quilt, marked "To Ma Rough, 1851".
Jean would be delighted to find some real history behind the quilt and these legends, together with some positive information about the Francis and Grose ancestors in Kea, Kenwyn (and possibly Redruth?), perhaps all from mining families.

Stephen Coats is investigating his Clymo (or Clemo) ancestors and has unconfirmed data as yet, in the Table above. John LAMPIER's granddaughter (Stephen's 2xGGM) was married to James BARKLA from St Agnes CON at Bodmin CON. The father of Margery CLYMO who married John Lampier was John CLYMO (bp.c1724, Bodmin?) and his father was George (bp.c1682 near Bodmin).
Stephen would be grateful for any assistance which can be offered to sort out and make his data more certain.

Ian Frazer is interested in finding the origins of his GGM Maria TRESCOWTHICK who married William ALFORD in the Greenwich area c1840. They had at least two sons, William (b.28 Jul 1845) and Samuel (b.11 Nov 1848).
Ian is having considerable problems in finding the birthplace of both Maria and William, especially from his location in France. Since William was a shipwright in the Woolwich Naval Dockyards, it has been suggested to Ian that he should consider looking for the place where William was an apprentice. It could have been in the Devon or Cornwall naval shipyards. His attention has been drawn to the fact that Trescowthick is a surname of definite Cornish origin and the surname Alford also occurs in Cornwall.
Ian would be delighted to find some contacts who could help him trace these two people.
[Webmaster JLS has included this entry since the name Trescowthick is so obviously of Cornish origin, even though the data so far place the family in Greenwich.]

Mrs Luann Tatlow is searching for more of her family history, especially about William John OSBORNE and his mother Emma. The name of his father is possibly Henry and they may have originated in St Columb Major CON but seem to have settled in Rosenannon CON where William John was born. The family were of the Methodist faith.
In a Birthday Book, Mrs Tatlow has found the following Osborne first names: Claudia (no data) - Annie (b.1871) and Emily (no data), both William's sisters - brothers may have included Henry & Edward.
William John Osborne and wife Rosina lived in St Austell for a few years after their marriage. However, William was in the police force and they lived in many places including Charlestown (St Austell), Canworthy Water, Illogan Moors and South Petherwin near Launceston. William's later life was spent at Sweetshouse near Bodmin. He died in 1952. He was Mrs Tatow's GGF and his daughter, her GM, is still alive.
There are family members buried at Treverbyn cemetery, north of St Austell and she is investigating this during visits there. One memorial stands out there, to Frank Osborne who was in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, died in 1916 and was buried at Treverbyn CON.
Mrs Tatlow would welcome any assistance that can be offered about the ancestors of this family who may have originated at St Columb Major. She has quite an amount of information about the family from Rosenannon onwards and would be happy to share it.

Barry Maddern is searching for information about the parents and ancestors of Solomon Richard Maddern who are believed to have lived in the Madron district of Cornwall. He is aware of three brothers and one sister of Solomon: John (c1830), William (c1832), David (c1834) and Mary Ann (c1840) who became Mary Ann Reynolds and lived in NSW AUS. After his arrival in Adelaide c1854, Solomon went to the mining towns of Kapunda, Burra and Moonta in SA, no doubt working there until he married in 1858.
Solomon and his wife Margaret Ann went to live in the Adelaide Hills area of South Australia at Harrogate, Rose Hill and Monarto where eleven children were born to them, including two sets of twins, a boy and a girl in each instance. Barry has quite a lot of information about the families who have lived in Australia and would welcome contact with researchers who could assist him to find more about the families from whom they originated in Cornwall.
Webmaster's note: Barry and his wife met me at a pasty supper table in Wallaroo SA AUS while we were both attending the wonderful program of the 16th Kernewek Lowender 2003 (Cornish Festival) in the Copper Coast District of Yorke Peninsula (Kadina, Moonta and Wallaroo SA AUS). This request has come from our meeting.

Monica Bishop wishes to find the origin and family data for William GILL who arrived in Sydney NSW about 1854 fom Cornwall. He was a miner in Cornwall and went to the Sofala goldfields where he married Mary Jane Douglass in November 1856.
Family recollections suggest that his father was Joseph, also a miner in Cornwall, and that he had a brother Joseph, possibly younger, who also came to Australia after him but Monica has no further information on him. No data on the family in Cornwall has been found so far.
Monica seeks information on William's parents and forebears, and on any other siblings for William.
William and Mary Jane Gill had children as they moved around NSW mining sites until they settled on a farm at Beneree near Springside, south of Orange NSW. William died there in 1884, his death certificate indicating that he had been in NSW for thirty years.
William moved from Sofala, to Forbes, became a miner at Cadiangullong (living in Cadia), finally settled as a farmer at Beneree.
Their children were: Elizabeth (b.1858, New Zealand Point NSW); William (b.1861 Sofala, d.1862 Forbes); Maria (b.1864 Cadiangullong); Mary J. (b.1866 Cadia); William (1870, Orange); Eliza (b.1872 Orange); Grace M. (1875 Orange); Joseph Charles (b.1877 Springside); Sarah E. (b.1880 Orange). After William died in 1884 at Beneree, Mary Jane remarried Thomas Bargwanna, son of Cornishman in the area. Mary Jane was buried in Orange NSW in 1924. The Gill family were closely associated with the Eslick family in the Orange/Bathurst area. Monica has more information on this association for those interested as daughter Mary J. Gill married George Eslick, son of Richard Harris Eslick, another Cornish miner.

Val Date wishes to contact descendants of William HOCKING and Ann nee ROBINSON, both of whom died at Burra SA in 1851. Many of their family of 11 arrived in SA on the "Bussorah Merchant" in 1848. Surnames of families subsequently marrying into this family include PRYOR, KESSELL, NETTELL, CARNE, DREW, YOUNG and ANDREWS.
Val also wishes to contact descendants of the daughter Mary HOCKING (1832-?) who married William Henry PHILLIPS (1825-?) in 1850 at Kooringa SA (now Burra). They had 8 children. Their son Thomas Henry PHILLIPS (1856-1899) married Cleland BONE (1864-1948). Their daughter Mary Jane PHILLIPS (1858-1903) married John KIRK (1857-1928). Val wishes to contact descendants of both Thomas Henry PHILLIPS and Mary Jane KIRK.

Bruce Walker is searching for family ancestry in Cornwall and Australia for the descendants of Thomas Gilbart (or Gilbert) who married Majery ...? in CON in a place not yet known.
NOTE 1: A Thomas Jelbert married Margery UREN in Illogan CON in 1797 but it is not yet known if these are the same Thomas and Marjery.
Thomas and Majery Gilbert had a son Thomas, born in Illogan CON on 1 Aug 1805.
He first married Mary BROWN at Phillack CON on 20 Nov 1830 but was a widower at the time of the 1841 Census. Their children were:
Thomas b.5 Oct 1832, d. 6 Jun 1936; John b.c1834; Emily b.c1836; Thomas b.17 Jul 1838, d. bef1849 possibly.
m2. Elizabeth MARTIN (of St Keverne CON) at St Erth on 28 Sep 1844 and their son was Thomas Aaron b. 1847 in CON.
NOTE 2: Thomas Gilbert and his second wife Elizabeth nee MARTIN emigrated from Cornwall to NSW AUS on the barque JULINDUR, arriving at Port Jackson NSW on 1 Apr 1849. Thomas and Elizabeth were accompanied by their son Thomas Aaron (2y old) together with John (15y old) and Emily (13y old) from the first marriage of Thomas and Mary nee Brown.
NOTE 3: The family settled at Cathcart near Bombala NSW. Thomas died at Bombala on 28 Apr 1882 but it not yet known what happened to Elizabeth. Thomas Aaron Gilbert may have married twice and he had four sons from his marriages. For more details about events in NSW AUS, please refer the queries to Bruce Walker.
