PAPUA NEW GUINEA DELEGATION
(UNDER THE DIRECTION OF PHILIPPINES NORTH PROVINCE)
ARAIMIRI
Situated in the Gulf Province of Papua New Guinea, Araimiri is the Salesian's most
isolated mission in the country, but a work that is dear to the heart of many confreres,
despite its difficulty. The Technical school there has been built up by the
Salesians over the past fourteen years, but may have to be closed due to range of
difficulties, amongst which the constant isolation and danger to health.
Nevertheless the Salesian presence in the Gulf will continue in one or another form.
KUMGI
Simbu Province, Central Highlands, begun only in 1994. The Salesians have 18.5
hectares of land in this area to set up a Technical school catering for Grade 10 Graduates
- the first such institution in the Highlands. The Bishop and civil authorites of
this region are most supportive of the Salesian venture.
VANIMO
Sundaun Province near the border with Irian Jaya. Here we find Don Bosco
Technical High School. A Salesian Residence is now being built along with extensions
to laboratories and technology workshops. On 28th August 1997 Don Bosco was
privileged to welcome Hon Simon Kaumi, Minister for Provincial affairs and Local
Government, who has donated K 10,000 towards the immediate construction of a dormitory.
GABUTU (PORT MORESBY)
Don Bosco Gabutu - some might know it as Badili - is the jewel in the crown of Port
Moresby Salesian presence and recognised in the National Capital District for its
effectiveness in responding to the needs of young boys who might otherwise join the
'rascals' who roam the Capital's streets. For the second year in succession, Don
Bosco Kabutu has also been judged the best kept school in the NCD. Recently, through
Government Grant (K 200,000), Don Bosco acquired a new library building. Students
from at least 15 Provinces of PNG attend Don Bosco.
VUNABOSCO
Rabaul - or more precisely Vunapope, East New Britain. Don Bosco Agro-Technical
school is a tribute to the work of the Salesians in this island Province of PNG.
Vunabosco has also been a fertile ground for vocations - the majority of young seminarians
now in Boroke at the aspirantate come from Vunabosco.
DELEGATION HOUSE
East Boroko, the newest of the Salesian presences, housing the Delegate (Fr. Francesco
Panfilo) and the aspirantate where some 10 or more young candidates are considering the
call that the Lord may be offering them to 'stay with Don Bosco'. But work is fast
developing also on the construction of workshops for the forthcoming technical school
which will assist young workers to gain apprenticeships and middle management careers.
