L I M E R I C K S

A limerick is a poem with five lines. The rhyming pattern of these five lines is A A B B A – which means that the first, second and last lines rhyme with ea ch other, while the third and fourth lines have a separate rhyme.   Apart from that, the perfect limerick has eight syllables in the first, second and fifth line and six syllables in the third and fourth line.

I’m not a good runner and I can’t bat a ball

I can’t even do the Australian crawl

But I never get bored

Because I like to record

Every poetic thing I recall

The exact rhythm and rhyme of the perfect limerick is demonstrated in the nonsense example:

dah dahdah dah dahdah dah dum      (A)

dahdah dahdah dah dee                    (B)

dahdah dahdah dah dee                    (B)
