The official books include a number of sample character types, but many are unbalanced and all are arguably TOO specific in their set up.
The following is not a subsititute for detailed Character creation. Instead, it is intended to be used to whip up a quick'n'dirty Character for the newbie who wanders up in mid-session asking to join in, or to create extra NPCs on the fly. Select a template (printed on cards beforehand is my suggestion), do some tweaking (Arcana, Fate Draw and/or additional HPs) and the result should be ready-to-play in a few minutes.
Certain principles are followed:
All templates are "book-legal", built from the standard 100 Hero Points (plus one free increase in one Trait). Common thinking amongst 7th Sea gamers (myself included) is that 120 HP is a much better starting budget. If this is the case, consider that each Character has the extra points to allocate as the Player or Referee sees fit.
No Arcana have been included. Their inclusion or exclusion is a matter of individual choices (and budgets).
All Traits are at least 2. Finesse, in most cases, is at 3. Arbitrary decision - a stat of 1 in anything is asking for trouble, and Finesse of 3+ is essential in action / combat. A few gamers babble about how inferior Characters make for superior role-play, but (IMO) such persons need clue-batting a few hundred times for being pretentious pratts.
These templates are not inscribed in stone. If Players want to alter details, and it is fully legal (downgrade one Trait and use the 8 points for more Skills / Knacks, for instance), that is their prerogative. If they know how, then they probably don't need these templates anyhow.
Some templates include points to be allocated to one or various types of Advantages. Examples are provided below. Note that some Advantages are only allowable for specific nationalities or groups, and that categories can overlap. Alternatively, if a Player doesn't want to spend the HPs as allocated, they can be used to purchase other things instead - eg. additional Traits, Languages, Skills or Knacks, etc..
Connections - Connection, Close Family Member, Cymbr Connection, Extended Family, Friend At Court, Home Neighbourhood, Member, Patron, all types of companions & servants.
Dracheneisen - Check out the tables in the Player's Guide and the Eisen book
Equipment - Inheritance (if mainly used for things), Uppman's Coat, Research Library; all types of weapons, artifacts & relics.
Status - Citation, Commission, Gentry, Governor, Jarl, Local Hero, Member (of high-profile organizations), Noble, Old Name, Ordained, Roving Don, all types of real estate & servants.
Wealth - Any Advantage that provides cash or generates a direct income.
Sorcerors / magic users are currently under-represented. Working up more than a very basic template for them is hard, and they are not a popular (or recommended) choice for beginning Players anyhow.
Those templates including Swordsman Schools are set up on the assumption that the Character chooses a School matching his/her nationality and with no discounts in effect (ie. cost of 25 points). If a School from a different nation is chosen, then that Character has to find 10 additional points from somewhere. If a discount exists, then the Character gets those points back for use elsewhere.
