HELEN CATTANACH - MOLER INTERVIEW
Their debut album heading our way in the near future, Moler had already gained themselves a fanbase following the release of their Shopping Trolley & Coaster e.p.'s. Now we've just seen the release of their amazing new single Infatuation, which has seen a marked improvement from their previous work, both in terms of sound production & in songwriting.
I recently had a chance to talk to vocalist & frontperson for Moler - Helen Cattanach.
With some small difficulty in locating Helen for our phone chat, it transpired that I woke her up from a snooze, where she was recovering from a late night trip from Melbourne to Sydney.
"Ummm..
Well it's really hard to catch up on sleep at times, especially when
you have to stay up until 2am or maybe 3am tripping up here. Our
schedule's been pretty hectic just lately too, what with mixing the
album & stuff."
So it's all recorded then?
"Yep, we're still going through the process of getting the final running order together & of course choosing B-sides for singles & other stuff like that."
I mentioned that I thought the single sounded very good in terms of sound quality & asked what the band thought about it.
"For sure! We've spent a lot more time getting the songs together than we did for the e.p.'s because we've got a bit more money to play with."
Does the rest of the album sound as good?
"We think so, but only the listeners are gonna be able to judge that. From our point of view, Infatuation was recorded at the same time as the rest of the album, so we think all the tracks sound good as far as that goes."
I read in the press release that Infatuation was based primarily around what TV keeps on bombarding us with & asked Helen if that was true.
"Only partly. I don't really have a time frame that it started, but there just seemed to be a buildup of those infomercial ads & other stuff they kept throwing at us on the news, you know, all that stuff you just gotta buy & that seemed to me to be the best way to have a bit of a say to that."
Radio has been a lot better this time around for Moler & I asked how that had helped the band.
"It's been really great so far, Triple J have really been playing the song for us & I hope some other stations will get behind it too, but that doesn't always help us as a band, because huge airplay doesn't necessarily translate into sales for any band. We're hoping that the song is good enough to sell well & help us argue for more money. When the singles & albums sell well, it must be an asset for a label to have that band singed up. I think Infatuation has also gone well because of the better sound too, the last couple of e.p.'s didn't sound quite as good."
There's a hidden track on the single, which is a really cool guitar laden jam & I asked what the impulse for that was.
"That's a bit of a funny story there, we had quite a few jams recorded & that particular one had it's own charm. I don't think any of the others will make it onto singles, but there's a few demos & stuff we're thinking about."
What does the future hold for Moler?
"As I said earlier, we're still mixing the album & deciding on a title for the moment, plus we're releasing a new single soon, but after that we'll be gigging around & hopefully get into reccording some more stuff after that."
Check out Moler's new single
Infatuation soon, it's out through MDS, their debut album is expected
around August or Spetember.
