David Bridie story / interview
Seemingly an everpresent figure in the Australian music scene, David Bridie has long been respected for his work in the band Not Drowning Waving & then My Friend The Chocolate Cake, as well as his work with soundtrack work on numerous films & other fields.
His latest album Act Of Free Choice is certainly a follow on from previous work, the sound instantly identifiable with the bands he's been associated with in the past. Just prior to the release of the album, I spoke with David about where he sees the music world taking him & the reason for waiting this long for a solo project.
The
first thing that came to mind was the name of the album & the
reasons behind it.
"There's never been any need from my point of view, to bring out a solo album. I don't know why, but it's just never been in my agenda until now. Why I thought it was time now is anyone's guess."
In particular, I pointed out the connotations behind the name of the album & asked if there were any reasons behind it.
"Well, no, now that you ask. I suppose you could read into the title that there had been pressures behind the scenes from the label or something, but no, no story there. It seemed a natural name for the album, you know, I've made the choice that now, it's time for me to do something myself."
So is David happy with the end result on Act Of Free Choice?
"Certainly. Not that I've ever really had lack of input to any of the things I;ve done, especially in the work I've done in film soundtracks & the like, it's just that the whole project here is the result of something I wanted to do myself & I like what it's turned out like."
Having worked with film, TV & other multimedia projects, David also has an active & very attractive website.
"Yes, it's located at www.davidbridie.com.au & there's already a significant amount of material there about the album itself, which has become a great project altogether, with a lot of multimedia content in conjunction with film makers & that's all added or being added to the site now, so people will be able to find out all about it."
One of the things I've always noticed about David's music is the easy way you can identify anything he's involved with.
"It's not a conscious thing I think, I suppose it's just a sort of continuance & wanting things to evolve. Soundtrack work is interesting to do because you're often inspired by a film that's had a totally different song put in, to fill it up, so you work in different ways there, while your own music just seems to form by itself."
So where to from here for David you might ask.
"There's no definite plan. I've never been one to have something written down that says this is the path I'm going to follow. I've always been happy with the choices I've made musically & there's still a lot of opportunities there for me. I enjoy the work I've done in film & TV & I think that might be where the future lies for now, but then I also love the things that I've been able to achieve with this album & the other things which have surrounded it, so you never know."
