TIPS ON PLAYING A NUMBER ONE

· Is the only player that can score and with that responsibility must not take careless risks

· A number one should be able to catch the ball and unload quickly and accurately.

· Number ones should be able to cross the penalty line bounce or free throw with a high percentage of success.

· Skill is needed to be able to bounce the ball at high speed.

· A number one needs to be an attacking player

· Ones should always be searching for the ball.

· Numbers ones need to be able to maintain possession while under fire from the opposition.

· Ones should be patient when needed.

· Playing one you should be able to anticipate the play to achieve a forward field position when the team is in attack.  Though not too far forward.  You should always be close enough to the play to be able to take some pressure off the other players in the section.

· Number ones need to control the game in the area.

· You need to be able to read the opposing number threes horse and player ability.

· Number ones need to be able to ride with one hand.

· Number ones need to be aggressive in defense.

What kind of goals are there and how do the goals look wide or small?

Straight     -         Wide                    Angle                    -         Small

Overhead   -         Wide                    Back Hand           -         Small

High            -         Wide                    Low                        -         Wide

Easier Goal Throwing

Be able to score form any angle including backhand.

Teach your horse where the goal posts are.  If your horse wants to run to the goals it makes your job easier

Let the ball do the work.  If you see a gap in between the defense and the goals – throw the ball.

Back Hand Goals

· Aim wrist at goals

· Racquet behind girth

· Lean Out

· Aim at furthest post.

Carnival Information
Notifying your intention to play
If you intend to play – you must notify Bridget Allan on 0412 160 800 the previous Monday before 6pm. If you do not notify Bridget you will not be included in the following weekend’s team.

Timing
Most Carnivals begin competition at 8.30am on Saturday and Sunday mornings. This can change to 8am or 9am. Please note while it would be nice to know our game times a few days before the weekend, we often do not find out until Friday night when some of our players travel to the Carnival. So it is important that you are at the ground no later than 7.30am on the Saturday morning.

Games
We usually play 3 to 5 games over Saturday and Sunday. The games are played in Chukkas. Chukkas in our Zone are 8 minutes each.

Travelling to Carnivals
Most players in the Moss Vale Club live 2 hours or more away from Carnivals. Because of this we leave on Friday nights – so we are ready for the 8.30am games on Saturday morning. If the Carnival is local we leave on the Saturday morning, plus we have the option of returning home on Saturday night and returning again on Sunday.

HOWEVER – when we host a Carnival – all players should stay at the MOSS VALE Carnival on both Friday and Saturday nights – as there is HEAPS of work to be done.

Breakfast, Dinner and Canteen
Canteens are run by the host club. Breakfast and Dinners are usually provided at a cost. It would pay for you to bring your own coffee, tea and snacks to save money and walking to the canteen. Occasionally Moss Vale has Club Cookouts – where all team members are required to bring one item for dinner, we then have a campfire cookout.
Moss Vale Carnival
This is a very busy time for our Club, especially the Committee. The following is an indication of what we need to do before, during and after the carnival. Please note we usually have 200 to 300 people attend our Carnival.

Miscellaneous
One player ONE HORSE. Spare horses may be brought for umpiring purposes.
Moss Vale Club usually has up to 5 meetings a year, including the AGM.
When we are at a Carnival we try to camp together so all players on the same level regarding time of play, social events etc.
Since our season starts really early this year, campfires may not be allowed, so bring your heaters and cookers.
We encourage people to attain their Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) Certificate to assist in serving behind the bar. Go to
http://www.lits.com.au/ - club will fund half the cost of the RSA.
