My great-great-grandfather, Humphrey Gledhill, emigrated from Yorkshire
to Ohio in the period 1868-1870 after the death of his wife Henrietta (though possibly
earlier).
His younger brother Walter Gledhill probably preceded him to the USA. He married Mary A.
Smith in either England or America.
Humphrey, Walter and Walter's wife Mary are buried in the cemetery at Monroe
Township, Richland County, Ohio, though Walter may not have died in Richland Co.
I want to locate descendants of Walter and Mary Gledhill in the USA.
Walter and Mary had the following children born in Ohio: John J. born approx 1851 and Thomas H. born 1859.
Thomas H. Gledhill married Flora (born 1866 in West Virginia). They had
the following children born in Ohio: Earl F. born June 1886, Harry M. born June 1888 and
Glendale born Sept 1893. In the 1900 census the family was living in Galion,
Crawford County, Ohio (145 First Avenue).
(STOP PRESS! Only one
week after I added the preceding two paragraphs to this page, I was contacted by a
descendant in California who was searching the web on "Gledhill Genealogy" and
was amazed to see the names of his great grandfather Thomas and grandfather Harry. The
wonders of the Internet!)
The 1880 Ohio census records a Henrietta Gledhill aged 26 living in
Springfield township, Richland County, Ohio. We suspect that she was one of our family.
I am also trying to locate Humphrey and Walter's brother Joseph b 1829
and Humphrey's son Albert b 1840 who may have gone to America as well. It
is fairly certain that Joseph preceded Humphrey to the USA. Humphrey may have lived with
him when he first arrived in America.
Humphrey and Walter's mother was Jane France. It is possible that there were descendants
named France in Richland Co., Ohio. I believe that the family named France who
operated quarries in Ohio around 1900 were descendants and I am trying to trace that
family.
