Search for your ancestors:
|
1. It is time-consuming to search the separate
family trees on this website. Instead, email Lloyd Gledhill on click for email address who will search the
site's database and his other Gledhill databases for you.
You should certainly do this if you are looking for a popular name, e.g.
Thomas Gledhill, as there are too many Thomases scattered through the
website. In such cases Lloyd Gledhill will require a place name and/or
a non-Gledhill spouse name or something else which helps find your particular
Thomas..

2. To help find your Gledhill ancestors in the Halifax,
Yorkshire area (including Elland, Fixby, Greetland, Halifax
Municipal Wards, Hipperholme cum Brighouse, Old Lindly, Rastrick, Skircoat,
Southowram, Sowood, Soyland and Stainland): Contact Sharyn Seaboryne at storm@paradise.net.nz
who has indexed the Gledhills in the 1861 census for Halifax and has kindly
offered to answer email enquiries.

Breaking news re the Query Board below:
Whilst I would be delighted to hear from any
Gledhills visiting this website, I am no longer accepting messages to the
Query Board.
I have written to all those who have submitted queries to date, suggesting
that they transfer their queries to three Gledhill forums which are
better able to provide this sort of service. They are specialist
websites designed for the purpose. Whilst these other forums don't at present
have the number of queries which are on my Query Board below, they do attract
a larger number of hits and will be more productive for Gledhill researchers
eventually.
Most importantly, this page will always include hyperlinks to these other
forums and that means a goldmine of Gledhill messages is only a click away
for visitors to my Gledhill Genealogy website.
I wish to express my appreciation to those who have contributed queries to
this website. In many cases their queries have elicited responses from
a previously unknown Gledhill relatives, leading to an expansion of each partys
knowledge of their shared family tree. Some wonderfully exciting
discoveries have been made and this has given me a lot of satisfaction.
I am not adding any new Gledhill family trees
either.
However I am
introducing an innovation which the other services don't provide,
namely pages contributed to my website containing textual matter. So,
for example, if someone wishes to write something about their Gledhill family
tree or the history of their Gledhill family I'll include that on the
website. Just send me something in text format, requiring only minimal
input from me. This will be your page. The subject matter should
be restricted to Gledhills of course, their spouses and near relatives.
As ever, I am happy to search my fairly extensive Gledhill databases
for any of your Gledhill families.

I'm from the Gledhill clan
who have been living in Seattle
for most of this century. We have only a family chart that contains names and dates.
The great grand-daddy at the top of the chart is Robert Linebrey Gledhill
(1797-1855) who married Pricilla Worth (1800 - 1890). They were the parents of
Edwin Gledhill (1830-1919) who married Charlotte Lugsdin (1832-1876) who were
the parents of Adolphus Theophilus Gledhill(1863-1904) - [not to be confused
with his uncle, the Rev. Adolphus Theophilus Gledhill (1838-1917)]. The former
A.T. Gledhill (1863-1904) was my Great-Grandfather. My grandfather, Harold
Bertram Gledhill (1895-1971) was born in Sault Ste Marie,
Michigan (or Ontario,
Canada
-we're not sure). If anyone has any information on any of these people, please
contact Jeff Gledhill on jdgledhill@bigplanet.com
(Jeff's family is linked to Dave Gledhill whose tree
is given in this website)
Can anyone tell me why
John and Walter Beaumont, born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, in about 1863 and 1874, the sons of Thomas
Beaumont and Maria/Marie Beaumont, both had Gledhill as their second Christian
name? Contact Sue Eggins on SusanE@ORGO.cad.gu.edu.au
Am looking for
ancestors and descendents of Alfred and Julia Gledhill, born circa mid 1860's
in England. Alfred's wife was Julie Whitehead, born circa 1867 in Honley,
Yorkshire, England. They had at least four
children: Nellie, born circa 1896; David (no birth information); Elizabeth
"Bessie" Gledhill, born October 1899; and Mary, born circa 1900.
Elizabeth "Bessie" also married a Phillip Gledhill. Please contact M.
L. Whitehead at LADMLW@worldnet.att.net
Thomas
Gledhill was born in 1825 in Halifax
and died July 6,1882 in Halifax.
He was married twice. His first wife was Susannah Gibson (b. 1826) and by whom
he had a son Walter and a daughter, Emma. Walter was born January 13,1851 in Chapel Town,
Halifax and died February 1,1899 in Halifax. The
funeral notice in the paper did not indicate his burial place. I do believe the
family was Methodist although I'm not sure. Walter first married Elizabeth Ann
Mitchell, b Dec 10, 1853, in Halifax
on May 3, 1873 in the Parish Church of Halifax. They had 7 children. Alice
GLEDHILL (my grandmother) was born April 4, 1878 and married David Christopher
Lawton who was born Nov 13, 1881 on August 1, 1903 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island USA. They had 2 children Walter
Lincoln LAWTON and Dorothy LAWTON PEABODY. Other siblings were Ernest (b Jan24,
1883), Lucy (b July 13, 1888 in Halifax),
Emma, Thomas (b. about 1890), Ann (b Oct 17,1894) and Harry (b.1881 and died
before the age of10). By his second wife, Catherine Something who
was born in 1841,there were 5 children—Thomas (1857),William (1871 or
1876),Edwin(1873),Arthur(1876) and Ada
(1879). Walter and his family lived at 7 Dentons Court Halifax
in 1881. Eager to see if there might be a connection somewhere.

I have a flyer of a T (probably Thomas) E Gledhill
with a photo taken at the end of 1800. It announces a tenor soloist for St.
Mary Cathedral in Edinburgh.
I believe this to be the St Mary's associated with the music school. It appears
that TE Gledhill studied with William Shakespeare when he was a music
instructor early in his career. Also the flyer suggests that TE Gledhill lived
at 19 Pitt Street
in Edinburgh.
I'm trying to find how TE is related to the rest of the above-mentioned Walter
(born 1851) Gledhill's family who lived in Halifax
before the children came to America
in 1903. Any ideas about finding out about TE Gledhill would be appreciated.

Sarah Ann Gledhill, my gg grandmother, was born in Halifax
Yorkshire c1839 and emigrated to New Zealand in 1863 to marry Jermiah Corney,
also formerly of Halifax. Her parents were Robert Gledhill (born Halifax c1812, a stone mason by trade) and Hannah
(probably nee Hanson, born Halifax
c 1812). They had 7 other known children: Susannah (Bp 1832), Elizabeth (Bp
1835), William (Bp 1837), Charlotte (B c1841), Hannah (B c1849), Emma (B c1845)
& Margaret (B c 1851). In 1851 the family were living at 25 Gardener Square Halifax
and in 1859-1861 at 3 York Place
Halifax. I have not been able to
locate Robert & Hannah on either the 1841 or 1871 census for Halifax. Can any one help
with this or any other info on this family please?
I have accumulated MANY Gledhills on the above census searches and would be
happy to check them over for specific people if given first name and
approximate age. Contact Sharyn Seaboryne in Wellington,

I am searching for
family connections to my forebear named Ambrose Gleadall or possibly Gleaddall,
born in or near Sheffield in
1810 or 1811. He married a Hannah Sheppherd or Shepphard, and emigrated to the
States between 1830 and 1850 sometime. I've discussed with Lloyd Gledhill the
obvious connections, but wondered if anyone has done any research along these
lines? They emigrated to Highland
County, Ohio,
where he is buried in a town called Samantha. Some of his sons names were
William, Richard, and Thomas. Any information or leads would be appreciated, as
I have no access to pertinent records here. Send any replies to jglead@usit.net . Thank you, Jeff Gleadle (a

John
Gledhill married Mary White [nee Turner] at Halifax Parish
Church 29 Mar 1822. He
was living in Northowram and Mary was living at the Queens
Head in Queenshead [later Queensbury]. Jonas
White, her deceased husband, was the Inn
keeper there and Mary took over until her marriage to John when her father,
Charles Turner, took the reins. I don't have any info on John apart from that.
There was, however, a James Gledhill, blacksmith, near New Dolphin and a Henry
Gledhill, blacksmith, Queenshead both listed in the 1845 Walkers directory of
Halifax whom I have to follow up. Contact Tana Willlis Johnson at FishMerlin@aol.com

he ?30 Nov 1655 and she 23 Feb 1657. Contact Mark Grace who has C17th &

William Gledhill first appears on the Dewsbury parish register in 1770, being the
father of Sarah.
Four more children - Thomas (1773), William (1776) and two Marys (1781 and 1786) followed.
Thomas, it seems, married Sarah Crawshay in 1794. They lived at Dewsbury Moor,
where Thomas may have manufactured blankets. He sired many children, including Mary, Betty, Frances,
Daniel, Thomas, Hannah and possibly Joshua
and William. However, it seems that only Mary, Daniel and Thomas survived to produce grandchildren. Mary,
the eldest, married William KILBURN in
1812 they were my great-great-grandparents. They lived in Heckmondwyke, as, I conjecture from the
censuses, did Daniel and Thomas and
their families.
One of Mary's grandchildren, Mary Ellen HINCHCLIFFE, also married a GLEDHILL in about 1885 their children
were George, Nellie, Ann and Henry. I believe Nellie married a chap named
JOHNSON during WWI.

Annie Gledhill lived at 41
East St, Golcar, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, in 1956.
I believe she would have been the grand-daughter of Samuel Wood & his
first? wife, Hannah Less or Lees. Samuel remarried about 1856 &
emigrated to Connecticut, U.S.A.,
then to Ontario, Canada,
leaving his oldest children in Yorkshire. I
don't know whether Gledhill was Annie's single or married name. Finding
Annie might lead me to my ancestors in Yorkshire.

Sarah Gledhill was born in Butterworth, Lancashire,
about 1839. She had
seven
children born in Butterworth, Robert, James, Mary, John, Charles, Edwin, and Susannah born

living at Ogden in Butterworth and
the descendants of James lived around Milnrow,
Lancashire, until the 1960's. My wife Monica and her sister Eunice, the
grand-daughters of James, ended up in New Zealand.

Joseph Gledhill of Lamb Hall, Longwood, Yorkshire, was married to Martha. They are buried in
the Salendine Nook Baptist
Church graveyard,
Joseph dying 20 December 1829 aged 65 and Martha 11 November 1830 aged 59.
Their nephew, John Brook, who died 27 September 1850 aged 58, was mentioned
on their gravestone and buried in the same graveyard. Contributed by
Arthur Johnson of Pocklington, Yorkshire
(now deceased).
Ann Gledhill, born circa 1824 Huddersfield,
married John Brook's eldest son John, born Lamb Hall circa 1826. Mary
Ann and John emigrated to Victoria,
Australia, in
1858. Mary Ann's parents were Daniel Gledhill, born 1801? Huddersfield,
Yorkshire, son of Joseph Gledhill born circa
1765 died 1829 and Martha. Daniel and Sarah Gledhill were married in
1822 in Almondbury, Yorkshire, and
their other children were Nathan born 1830 and Joseph Gledhill born
1832. Contributed by Arthur Johnson (now deceased).
Is there anyone else
tracing Joseph (dec 20/12/1829) & Martha (dec 11/11/1830) Gledhill of Lamb Hall, Longwood, Yorkshire?? We are decended from the son (John
Brook) of their nephew -John Brook- - who was born at Lamb Hall
and all 3 are buried in Salendine Nook
Baptist Church
Graveyard. ( what is the story there I wonder??). John Brook (b 1825) emigrated to Australia
on the Harmonides in july 1858 with his wife Maryann Gledhill (b1825) and children Jonas, Agnes &
Francis. From there it got messy as
his son Jonas married an Emma Dean and their son Alfred Arnold Brook dropped
the "BROOK" bit and died as ARNOLD
in WW1. Mum is the grand-daughter of Alfred Arnold BROOK- and was always told
she looked like "Lady Brook"-- except had no idea who the old
aunties were referring to at the time as her dad's surname name was ARNOLD!! Thank you Cheryl Follett. My email is shezza51 at

The John Gledhill in the above query is the Jack Gledhill in the
following query:
Grace Gledhill was my grandmother, born (I think in Yorkshire)
around 1897-1898. Her father was Jack Gledhill, her mother's name is unknown
but her first name started with B. Grace Gledhill had many
brothers and sisters. One of her brothers went down on the SS Hood in the
first world war, another died from the influenza plague. She also had a
sister called Mary and another called Dollie. Dollie migrated to Australia
with her husband Ben Bottomley in the 1920's. Grace and her husband
Richard Harland, a Yorkshireman, also migrated to Australia in the 1920's. I think
Grace Gledhill came from Bradford,
but I'm not sure. Her father at one time owned the Maison's Arms in London??
I'm keen to locate Grace's relatives. Contact Carol Kanthan at oden115@hotmail.com.
