Europe 2008 | George Filev

Gaudi, Gaudi and more Gaudi.

I love the work of Antoni Gaudi and it goes hand in hand that I love Barcelona.

This is a residential building called Casa Milà better known as La Pedrera (catalan for The Quary) and was completed in 1912. If you go to Barcelona, I recommend you visit this magic place. It’s located at Passeig de Gràcia in the Eixample district.

Next we visited another one of Gaudi’s creations, the Sagrada Familia “Expiatory Temple of the Holy Family”. You wont find a more impressive example of a catholic church than this masterpiece. Construction began in 1882 and continues to this day. It is slated to be finished in 2020.

You can really see how much of Gaudi’s inspiration for his designs came from observing nature when you get inside and look around.

7

Another one of Gaudi’s creative designs was Park Güell. The idea behind the park was to be a commercial housing estate but this concept didn’t take off and what is left is a great park with some wonderful architectural features.

One of the most popular instalments is a focal point in the park, the main terrace which is flanked with a seating bay in the form of a serpent.

38

Apparently, in order to design the curvature of the bench surface, Gaudi used the shape of buttocks left by a naked workman sitting in wet clay. Now that’s using your head, or was that you arse?

40

Doric column’s support the seating terrace area and it was just as pretty underneath with mosaic work on the ceiling.

33

We stayed in a quaint apartment in Barcelona with a view of Sagrada Familia. Check out the old fashioned lift.

48

It was close to the action and allowed us to venture off on day trips to some other special parts in the region. One day we went to “Montserrat” which means “jagged (serrated) mountain” in Catalan.

The gondola ride up there was amazing.

There is a great big church up there that hosts the Virgin of Montserrat and which is identified by some with the location of the Holy Grail. All I know is that I identify it with priests and their relationships with little boys. Have a look at these statues and see what I am talking about.

28

And I thought the church opposed gay marriage? What is this all about? I may have to look into religion a little further.

26

Later that evening in Barcelona, we saw a fantastic fountain display.

32

and the next day we went shopping.

49

Where else but Barcelona are you going to find such fancy window displays? Seeing as the shopping was so good, we decided to head to Sitges, a holiday destination just 30min train ride along the coast.

The old citadel had some ornate additions to the buildings.

50

We loved some of the stone sculptures.

One sign that was a little disturbing was this one to deter people from Limbo dancing in public. Apparently you could get struck down by lightning.

53

Our holiday went fast and Michael bid me farewell and headed back home while I ventured off to Turkey for another gig.

51

Had a blast and got all inspired to build a house after seeing all the beautiful creations but realised you need capital to make things happen. So it’s off to work I go.

See you in Turkey.
