You gotta ring those bells

Hello there dingers, dongers and ding-a-lings. I have been rehearsing a new show with Strange Fruit called "Ringing the Changes" and it is shaping up to be a real hit.

rtc3

For example, here are a couple of handsome hit men.

rtc4

Our job, along with our stunning hit women, is to hit things with our mallets, namely BELLS!

rtc6

We are working up the poles but this time we have to play a score specifically composed for the show by Graeme Leak. So we are swinging, moving, reading and hitting to create beautiful music.

rtc5

You may be wondering why I am wearing the ear muffs? Those bells are bloody loud. Seeing that we now need to be musicians as well as acrobats it is only fitting that our conductor (Timothy Phillips), is up a pole. Ok, it's a little one but you gotta start somewhere.

rtc2

As for the setting for the show, it is in a special place called Birrarung Marr in the city of Melbourne, Australia and placed between the
Federation Bells.

rtc7

We are performing as part of the official opening of the
Melbourne International Arts Festival and if you are in town, I suggest you get along and check it out as it's going to be GROUSE!

  • Federation Bells, Birrarung Marr
  • Fri 9 – Mon 12 Oct at 7.30pm
  • 30min no interval
  • Free

If you are feeling game, and I know many of you tallented individuals would enjoy being a part of the action, you too can be in the show. Here's how.

rtcTin

You too can perform in the Melbourne International Arts Festival.

Strange Fruit will be performing Ringing The Changes at the Melbourne International Arts Festival, and they have a part for you – playing a couple of brief tin can interruptions to a piece composed by world renowned composer Graeme Leak, to be played on the Federation Bells at Birrarung Marr.

It’s easier than you think.

Show up at the Federation Bells at Birrarung Marr at 6:00pm on October 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th
Bring three things:

o   An empty tin can, label removed, preferably with corrugated sides. No sharp edges.
o   A metal teaspoon.
o   A chopstick.

·       Conductor Timothy Phillips will rehearse you in your part until 6:30pm
·       Come back at 7:15 and take a place in the crowd
·       Relax and enjoy the show – but be prepared
·       Timothy will conduct you in your part three times during the performance
·       The show runs 30 minutes from 7:30 – afterwards you can go out and enjoy the festival
·       You can play one night – or all four if you like.
·       Once you have rehearsed you don’t need to come back again for rehearsal
·       Families welcome – but under ten’s will need to be supervised.

No musical experience required. It’s easy, it’s fun and anyone can do it!

Ringing the Changes is a world premier of a new work – come along and help us make history.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Much love,

George
