Paint Me Lucky

WORDS club Monday night tourneys resumed after a few weeks break for reasons including Rene attending the Magnetic Island tournament.

Lucky Me

My opponents were "thrilled" when the tile gods lavished reward after reward upon me -- resulting in an avalanche of bingos that I had not hitherto been able to produce for a very long while. There was absolutely no warning that this might happen since only two days earlier, at Arie's War of the Words tournament, my lucky left hand was misfiring somewhat. Also, I missed the easy NEu(R)ONES to lose a crucial game against eventual winner Simon Walton. Being awoken at 2am that morning by Florence's cute 1-year old granddaughter's burblings like "mma" , her attempt at the Dutch OUMA ("new Collins word!" - I thought to myself), and "ello" ("no anagram" - I mused), didn't help. Anyway, that's another story.

Returning to the main story: Rene was first to suffer when out of my opening rack of WRITIN? , I slapped down WRITINg. By rack 3 I was able to thread DELATION through the T parallel to a few other words. Rack 11 allowed CA(T)ENaTE though I chickened out of (T)ENTAClE for a higher score. Meanwhile, Rene was getting her worse tiles ever. Val was next. She challenged my UNLACES on rack 3, but not ITALICS on rack 7 (nearly missed it) and STONIEsT on rack 10. Hmm, I was beginning to wonder whether I could keep up this Nigel-matching average of 3 bingos per game. President Natalie was about to find out that there's no stopping the tile gods when they favour someone. GLAIRES was my choice from rack 3, followed immediately by PAIN(T)IER then RES(T)OKES after first dumping YEVE. Surely, I was due for some bad luck but YOUKING appeared on my opening rack against Jean, then OTARInE from an embarrassment of choices by rack 5. I admit I spent the rest of the game fishing for a 3rd bingo which finally eventuated on rack 13 with ROSItED. Remarkably, the distribution of tiles favoured me so much that none of my opponents was able to assemble a single bingo during the 12-bingo avalanche! I'm sure this must be unprecedented in WORDS history and will never happen again for me anywhere.

Taking my bows, I must thank some of the little people that helped along the way - PIGGY, WEMBS, AGAMA, FEEB, VILD, YEVE, DEID, CYTE, RUGA, ILIA, EUGE, EVO all contributed to maintaining rack balance that produced so many rewards. And of course I must thank my long-suffering but "thrilled" opponents ;)
