he Turin-Milan Hours are one of the greatest documents in the cultural history of the Western world. You will rarely encounter a manuscript that has been - and still is - the object of so much speculation and adulation.
The magnitude of the achievement represented by Jan van Eyck’s panel paintings is well known. Even during his lifetime, it was generally acknowledged that his painting techniques surpassed everything that had gone before. We need only think of the "Ghent Altarpiece", "Giovanni Arnolfini and his Wife" or other famous paintings which he completed.
Discussion on the illuminated manuscript however, has brought a totally new dimension to what is already a fascinating issue. For we can justifiably assume that his ideas, the foundation of a completely new painting style, were first expressed in this manuscript. The studies on which this assumption is based come to another exciting conclusion, that this manuscript contains both the earliest and last known examples of Jan Van Eyck’s work.
