his lavishly illustrated manuscript from the 15th century contains a number of the most important and informative treatises from two central areas of the late medieval healing practice: Medical astrology and hygienics.

Particular emphasis is placed on the influence of the sun on its course through the zodiac and on that of the moon and the planets on Man's health and character. Since it was considered fitting for the well educated layman to be well versed in such matters, the manuscript also provides valuable evidence on urban culture in the 15th century.

It is difficult to suppress a smile at the delightful, carefree innocence of the numerous miniatures - of which there are a total of 54 - while the humorous artistic style is irresistible. There are illustrations depicting the rules for the twelve months of the year, the twelve signs of the zodiac, those planets known at the time - these being Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus and Mercury - the moon and the reign of the sun, the four cardinal humours, along with other illustrations depicting blood-letting, urinalysis, sauna and astrology.

The text of the manuscript also provides a wealth of interesting information, omitting practically nothing that was known at that time in the field of astro-medical thought and practice.

The manuscript was prepared in Nuremburg around the middle of the 15th century for the Schurstab dynasty and is currently kept under catalogue number Ms. C 54 in Zurich's Central Library.

This work of art comprises 124 pages, approximately 208 x 295 mm in size. With its dark brown cowhide binding, the volume is a faithful re-creation of the original and is limited to 980 copies world-wide
