A Majestic Illuminated Manuscript
14th Century

[L]es Petites Heures was commissioned by The Duke of Berry around 1372, and it required the participation of five of the most distinguished book illustrators of the age to complete a work of bibliographic art which is almost unparalleled in any other illuminated manuscript from this period. In 1784, the illuminated manuscript was acquired by the library of Louis XVI and it is now one of the most precious works in the safekeeping of the Bibliotèque Nationale in Paris.

The task of recreating all 586 pages of the illuminated manuscript in its original size of 145 x 210mm - with miniature pages lavishly embellished in gold and partly in silver, as well as over 300 further magnificently decorated pages - was meticulously carried out by skilled craftsmen.

Cut to match their original shape, the pages are gilt edged on all 3 sides. The magnificent, all leather, black binding with 5 ribs and rich gold embossing is identical to the original. The over 300 page, authoritative commentary volume matches the size of The Fine Art Facsimile Edition. It is available in German and French. The Fine Art Facsimile Edition and the commentary volume are supplied in a lucite box for their protection and enhancement and is limited to 980 copies world-wide.

A documentation kit containing 2 sample pages, in the original size, from the Petites Heures Fine Art Facsimile Volume, plus an illustrated, 12 page information brochure, is available for $US70.
