his volume of the Corpus discusses the oeuvre of Andrea Bonaiuti, one of the leading characters of Florentine painting in the second half of the 14th century. The decoration of the Spanish Chapel, one major work of the artist, has already been discussed in the posthumous publication of Richard Offner and Klara Steinweg (Corpus of Florentine Painting, IV/VI, 1979). Death unfortunately prevented these authors from examining the rest of the masters production; a task which is now brilliantly faced by Johannes Tripps.
The present volume discusses not only the fresco style in Pisa, but also Andreas panel paintings and stained glass work, which remained hitherto relatively little known. The discussion of Bonaiutis oeuvre is divided into two parts. In the first of these the works from the artists early maturity are dealt with, i.e. his production before the completion of the frescos in the Spanish Chapel of Santa Maria Novella (1367). The second part describes the works of the late period, ending with the artists death in 1379.
The introductory essay reconstructs Andreas artistic development, and analyses the effects of his painting on the artists of his circle as well as the influence on him of contemporary Sienese painting. The increasing number of works attributed to the master and his workshop during previous decades are also evaluated critically, offering an important contribution to our knowledge of Florentine painting in the Gothic period.
