Simon Bening's Flemish Calendar
[Picture][Sold Out]

A Major Work of Art in a Small Format
16th Century

[A]round 1540, Simon Bening in Bruges was commissioned to create this enchanting Book of Hours for an unknown aristocratic personality. Its subsequent whereabouts remained unknown until, a century later, the book of prayers was purchased by the Electoral Bavarian Treasury during the period of Elector Ferdinand Maria. In 1781, it was subsequently entrusted to the Bavarian Court Library, together with other valuable books.

Simon Bening's Flemish Calendar is justifiably considered a jewel among the books of hours of the late Middle Ages. This delightful work of art by the greatest book illuminator of his time is currently preserved in the Bavarian State Library in Munich under the designation Clmn 23 638.
