Beatus of Liébana - The Only Beatus Coming from a Nunnery
13th Century


[W]ritten in Caroline-Gothic script, between 1219 and 1235, and commissioned by Ferdinand III The Saint and his wife Beatriz de Suabia. It is the only Beatus coming from a nunnery: Cistercian nuns of the Convent of San Andrés de Arroyo, Palencia with direct dependency from Santa María de las Huelgas, Burgos. The Codex has been in the collection of the Bibliotèque Nationale de France since 1882.

Bound in calf leather, crimson colour the Codex has 334 pages, with 69 illuminations, 2 columns, 39 lines, and is sized 460 x 300 mm. Printed on especially hand made paper reproducing the thickness, touch and smell of the original. It is the only Beatus presenting more than one iconographic tradition in its illuminations.

This unique issue is strictly limited to 987 copies, numbered and authenticated by affidavit.

Also available is a portfolio of Twelve of the most engaging illuminations (Format: 300 x 430 mm) from the Beatus of Liébana of San Andrés de Arroyo. The miniatures are printed on thick art paper, appropriate for framing. They are attached inside a folder with a short description of each image written in Spanish by Professor Joaquín Yarza Luaces, Art Historian from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. This portfolio costs $US50.00 plus postage and handling.
